whosucceededintheastonishingfeatofcombiningaloveoftheparishministrywith
leadershipinthestudyofthelanguageandarchaeologyofancientChristianEgypt"
wrotetheBritish"Times"ofProfessorPlumley,whodiedonJuly2,1999.Itisasuc-
cinctsummingupofalongandactivelifeoftheReverendProfessor,whosetieswith
thePolishscholarlycommunitywerethoseofspecialfriendshipandarchaeological
cooperation.
JackMartinPlumleywasbornatPeverell,nearPlymouth,onSeptember2,1910,
andspenthisyouthinLondon.HereadTheologyatSt.John'sCollege,Durham,where
healsostudiedHebrewandSyriac.Ordainedapriest(ChurchofEngland)in1934,he
continuedtodevelophisinterestinEgyptology,andespeciallytheCopticlanguage,at
theinspirationofeminentEgyptologistJdroslavCerny.Theoutcomeofthesestudies
