Theroomadjoiningthebasilicaonthe
northproved6mwide[cf.Fig.1;Fig.4].
Athirdofitwasclearedinthecourseof
thiscampaign.Meritingattentionisthe
differenceinthethicknessofthewalls
betweentheapse,theouterwallofthe
basilicaandthesideroom:1.20m,0.80m
and0.50mrespectively.
Muchwouldsuggestthatthisroomwas
usedasachapel.Twonicheswerecutinto
thewesternpartofthetranseptwall:one
semicircular(0.80mdeepand1.80m
wide),theotherrectangular(0.40mdeep,
1.20mwide).Thespacebetweenthemand
thenorthwallofthechapelwasoccupiedby
asmallchamberpavedwithlimestoneslabs,
enteredfromanarrowpassageleadingfrom
thewest.Thispassagewaslaterblocked
withapieceofdestroyedwallandagranite
column(diameteratthebase0.22m;height
0.85m)incorporatingabaseandshaft
whichnarrowedtowardthetop[Fig.5].Its
shapeandthedepressionforabowlinthe
topoftheshaftindicatethatithadservedas
thefootofawashbasin.Nearby,bythe
northwallofthechamber,asmallchannel
wasdiscovered,presumablyintendedas
ameansfordischargingwaterfromawash-
basinthathadoncestoodthereandwhich
servedliturgicalpurposesinthechapel.
