deepdownoneside,stillfilledwith
remnantsoflimemortar,whichhadserved
tofixthecolumntoawall.Itmayhavebeen
usedinthesecondarywalls,alignedN-S,
thatwerefoundstandinginfrontoftheapse
(tosupporttheciboriumabovethealtar?).
Ofthesamediameterisacolumnbasedis-
covered0.10mabovethefloor,atadistance
of3.50mfromthesaidwall.Thefill
yieldedmorecolumnshaftfragments,one
ofnummulithiclimestone,theotherof
marblewithadiameterof0.66cm.
Thebottomofthekilnwasexplored
furtherdowninordertoremoveanother
chancelpoststandinginsideit.Thisele-
ment(H.1.30m;W
.0.21m)differsinsize
fromthepillarfoundlastyear;italsobears
evidenceofreuse[Fig.8].Originally,itmay
haveflankedtheentrancetothebema,but
waslatermovedtothecornerofthebalus-
trade,asindicatedbymodifiedprofiling
withsecondarilycutgroovesformounting
screens.Itaddstothelistoffindstestifying
toalterationsintroducedintheinterior
decorationofthechurch.
Similarlyasinthepreviouscampaign,
fragmentsofred-paintedplasterwere
recoveredfromabovethekiln,nearitsclay
wall.Someofthesepiecesofplasterwere
evidentlyfromthejoiningofwalland
ceiling.Behindthiswall,lyingonthe
dislodgedpavementisacollapsedblockof
bricksheldtogetherwithcoarsemortar.
Similarblocksofbrickswerefoundlastyear
oneithersideoftheallegedaltar.They
appeartobepartoftheruinedbarrelvault
oftheapse.
Trialpitsdugunderthestepsoftheapse
inthenorthandsouthconfirmedyetagain
thatthelowerflooroftheapsewaslaid
directlyontopofthekiln'sfiringgrid.
Potteryfromunderthisfloorhasbeendated
tothe2ndcenturyatthelatest.
