atoilet,morelikelyakindofhousehold
hidingplace.Teotherunits(22,23,
63,64)couldhavebeenusedtostoregoods
unloadedintheharbor.Afinebowlmade
ofgreygranite,presumablycomingfrom
theEasternDesert,wasfoundinroom64.
Itwas27cmindiameterand14cmhigh
[Fig.6].Bowlsofthiskind,resembling
mortars,wereconsideredluxuryitemsand
werehandeddownfromgenerationto
generation.Teywereknownalreadyin
Pharaonictimes.Inthepresentcase,the
bowlcanbedatedtothe5th-7thcentury
(Bura2009;Tzitzibassi2002:358-359,
Cat.No.418-442;Rodziewicz1984:87,
Fig.82).Teresidentialoradministrative
partofthehousewouldhavebeenlocated
ontheupperfloor.Inalaterphase,theunits
ontheeastandwest,previouslyusedas
aportico,wereclosedupandaddedtothe
mainbodyofthebuilding.

Tenorthernpartofthecomplex,
designatedasSH04,followedadiferent
layout.Frontingtheentranceonthe
northwasaporticoapproximately2.50m
longandabout2mwide.Itopenedon
astreetthatseparatedthecomplexfrom
anotherstructure(P01),whichcouldhave
beenakindofcustomshousestanding
directlyoppositetheexitfromthequay.
Inalaterphase,theporticowasdivided
intotwoseparateunits(40,44),whichled
todiferentpartsofthebuilding,including
thestaircase(48)inthenortheastern
cornerofthebuilding,thecourtyard(43)
inthecenterandasmallunit(41)inthe
northwesterncorner.Tecourtyarddid
notgiveaccesstotheotherrooms,which
functionedindependently.Provisionally,
onecanalsosuggestaconnectionbetween
unit48behindthestaircaseandroom53,
whichwaspartofhouseSH05;itmayhave
originallyconnectedthetwobuildings.
Inalaterphase,theeasternpartof
thenorthernporticoofhouseSH04was
closedofandturnedintoaseriesofsmall
rooms.Tereissomeevidencetosuggest
thattherebuildingfollowedaconfla-
grationthatconsumedthispartofthe
complex.Tefiremayhavehadsomething
todowiththePersianinvasionofAD
619/620.Shouldthistheoreticaldatingof
thefirebeconfirmed,thentheentirelate
phaseofthecomplexSH02-SH06could
bedatedtothe6thcentury.TePersian
raidersplunderedeverythingintheirway
andespeciallyelementsofarchitectural
decoration,whichtheycarriedof.

Weaklypreservedwallswerenotedon
thenorthernsideofthestreetfronting
thenorthsideofbuildingSH04[see
Fig.1].Tebuildingtechniquehere
