museumcatalogueastheQur¶an(ɄapaH)isactuallyatranslationoftheQur¶anintoPolishthat
wasretransliteratedfromtheLatinalphabetintotheArabicscriptandsignedbyJanMurza
TarakBuczacki.ThismeansthattheTefsirofGrodnoisanother(formal)VersionofthePhilo-
mathtranslationoftheHolyScriptureofIslam9towhichtheanonymousauthorgaVetheform
ofatraditionalTatartefsirrecordedintheArabicscript.
Owingtothis9asmanyasfourVersionsofthePhilomathtranslationoftheQur¶anwere
identifiedandthenewlydiscoVeredmanuscriptfromCzombrowproVidesthebasisforallthese
Variants2.
WhilestudyingthefragmentofthemanuscriptfromCzombrow9weaskedmanyquestions
eVenthoughwedidnotalwaysfindanswers.Wewerewondering9amongothers9whetherthe
manuscriptistheoriginaltranslationrenderedbyReV.DionizyChlewińskiandIgnacyDomey-
kooralatercopythereofmadebyananonymousauthorfromamongeitherthePhilomathsor
MuslimTatarsfromNowogrodek.Unfortunately9thelackofcomparatiVemanuscriptreference
materialdepriVedusofthebasisfordrawingsomeconclusionsabouttheauthorshipofthedis-
coVeredfragment.NeVertheless9weanalysedotherTatarmanuscriptsthatoriginatedatasimilar
timeandplace.ThegroundforpropoundingasurprisinghypothesiswasproVidedbytheTefsir
ofAlytus.Itwaswrittenin17239but-asindicatedbyacorrespondingentry-wascorrected
andcommentedonbytheImamofVinkãnupiai9IbrahimJanuszewski9in1836(113yearslater)3.
ThesimilarityofImamJanuszewski¶shandwritingwiththatVisibleonthefragmentfromCzom-
browissoeVidentthatitmaybereasonabletoconcludethatImamIbrahimJanuszewskimade
acopyoftheoriginaltranslationofthePhilomathtranslation.HoweVer9thisthesismustbeVeri-
fied9alsobyane[pertgraphologist.
FurtherquestionsweaskedconcernedtheplacewherethemanuscriptwasdiscoVered.We
deVotedmuchattentiontothecultureandpatriotism-formingroleofPolishlandownersinthe
nineteenthcenturyandtheassociationsofthemanorinCzombrowwiththeTatarsfromNowo-
grodekandthePhilomathsfromVilnius.WhileadirectrelationshipbetweentheheirsofCzom-
browandtheMuslimTatarscouldnotbeconfirmed9therelationshipbetweentheowners
ofCzombrowandthePhilomathsseemstobeobVious.AccordingtosomeresearchersofAdam
Mickiewicz¶slifeandwork9CzombrowwasaprototypeofMickiewicz¶sSoplicowo9themanor
describedinhisepicpoemPInTIdBusz4.ItisafactthatAdamMickiewiczhadcloserelations
withthemanorinCzombrow.hismotherserVedthereasthefirst-aidmaidandtheheiress
ofthemanorwashisgodmother.DuringhisstayinNowogrodekandVilnius9Mickiewiczmust
haVeVisitedCzombrowand9asastudentoftheVilniusUniVersity9mightbringhisPhilomath
