chemicalanalyses,hewasabletodemonstratethat,althoughthebeachsandis
ahighlythermallyastatichabitat,lessoxygenatedthanthewateroftheneigh-
bouringlake,itishomeforrichanddiverselifeforms.Theyincludenumerous
speciesofalgae,protozoans,nematodes,gastrotrichs,tardigrades,oligochaetes,
turbellarians,and-primarily-verynumerousrotifers.Thosestudieswereim-
portantlycomplementedbyotherpapersdevotedtothepsammon(WISZNIEWSKI
1935a,b,1936a,b)aswellasaground-breakingpaperonpsammicrotifermales
(WISZNIEWSKI1934a).Hislargestpublication,“LesRotifèrespsammiques”,con-
tainsdescriptionsof82rotiferspecies,including14speciesandthreegenera
(Wierzejskiella,Wigrella,andMyersinella)newtoscience(WISZNIEWSKI1934a).
Wiszniewski’ssimultaneousstudiesonrotiferslivinginthebranchialchamber
offreshwatercrustaceans(WISZNIEWSKI1953b)attesttotheunusualbreadthof
hisknowledgeandinterests.
Adetailedaccountofthestateofknowledgeoftherotiferfaunaofvarious
areasofPolandiscontainedin“FaunawrotkówPolskiirejonówprzyległych”
[“TheRotiferFaunaofPolandandAdjacentAreas”](WISZNIEWSKI1953a).
Asshownbythelistofrotiferliteraturecontainedinthepaper,theperiodof
1777-1939spawnedabout120papersdealingwiththoseinvertebrates.Consider-
ingthemajorfocusofthosepapers,Wiszniewskidividedthemintothefollowing
sixgroups:
1)taxonomicandfaunistic,
2)biologicalandanatomical,
3)planktonological,
4)dealingwithwaterpollution,
5)popularscienceandconferencecommunications,
6)miscellaneous.
TheregionsofWielkopolskaandkujawy,LakeWigry,theregionofPod-
lasie,andtheenvironsofWarsaw,Cracow,Gdańsk,andŁódźareareaswithin
thepresentboundariesofPolandregardedbyWiszniewskiasthebestknownin
termsoftheirrotiferfauna.GIEYSZTOR(1963)andBRZĘK(1988)provideafull
descriptionofWiszniewski’sscientificlegacy.
ResearchonrotifersinPolandbenefitedgreatlyfromthecontributionof
ProfessorLeszekPawłowski(1902-1980),aprominentfaunistandtaxonomist,
themosteminentPolishauthorityonbdelloidrotifers(Bdelloidea).Heleftdetailed
descriptionsoftheparasiticrotifersDrilophagabucephalus(PAWŁOWSKI1934)
andD.delagei(PAWŁOWSKi1935)andstudiedmoss-dwellingrotifers(PAWŁOWSKI
1938).However,hismostimportantworkinvolvesresearchontherotiferfauna
