asexpressingthemostessentialcoreandcreedoftheliberalfaith.Why
faith?Becauseitrequiresaninitialpremiseliketheonejuststated,which
isnotsupportedwithunquestionableevidencebut,instead,remains
apropositionopenfordebate.Itseemstomethatpreciselythisinitial
premisegivesthebestaccountforsubsequentliberalpostulateslike
pluralismofconflictingvalues,theautonomyoftheindividual,orthe
neutralityofthestate.However,thepracticeofliberalstateshasrecently
shownsomenegativeside-effectsoffollowingtheseideals.Preoccupation
withprotectingtherightsoftheindividual,whichbecametheultimate
goalandconcernoftheliberalregime,resultedinthesubstantialgrowth
ofatomizationofthemodernliberalsocieties.Consequently,anumberof
scholarsandpoliticalactivistsin1980’sand1990’sraisedtheissueofthe
lossofcommunityintheWesternpoliticalthoughtandpractice.Quite
understandably,theysooncametoberecognizedascommunitarians,
thoughmostofthemwereuneasywiththenewlabel.
Theobviousandprofounddifferencesbetweenthewaysthatthe
particularcommunitarianscholarsaddressedtheproblemsofliberal
philosophyandpracticemakeitquitedifficulttoestablishtheessenceof
communitarianism.Still,thepointremainsthatalloftheintellectuals
whoarecommonlyconsideredcommunitariandoaddressmoreorlessthe
sameissues,suchastheplaceofindividualversushisorhercommunity,
