Teachingforandaboutwell-beingcanstretchalongacontinuumfromsmalladjust-
mentstoregularpracticestoreflectconsciouslyonwell-being,tomoreexplicitactiv-
itiesorevenextensiveprojects.Iwillofersomesuggestionsacrossthiscontinuum
ineachcategory.Toorganisetheactivities,IwillstructurethemaroundthePER-
MA+healthmodel.
PositiveEmotions
Emotionsaretraditionallyclassedasnegativeorpositive,althoughitismorecom-
plexthanthatasitisthefunctionofanemotionthatcanbedefiningforhowitis
perceived.Nevertheless,thisdistinctionremainsausefulguide.Inessence,negative
emotionscanbeinhibitiveforlearningastheycancauseproblemswithlanguage
processingandperformance.Terefore,oneapproachistofindwaysofreducing
negativeemotions.Teotherapproachistoactivelyseektogeneratepositiveemo-
tions.Fredrickson(2011)foundthatpositiveemotionsarenotonlyabalancetoneg-
ativeemotions,buttheyaredesirableinthemselvesastheycanCbroaden-and-build’
ourcapacityastheyopenourmindsandwillingnesstoengagewithresourcesand
thusgrowinourcapacities.Insum,thismeanswhenteachingforpositiveemotions,
wecanseektoreduceorcountertheefectsofnegativeemotionsaswellasactively
boostpositiveemotions.

Ratheritmeansunderstandingourwholerangeofemotionsandfindingstrat-
egiestocopewiththem.Teabilitytounderstandone’sownemotionsisthe
cornerstoneofsocio-emotionalcompetencewhichiscentraltopositiverelation-
ships.Tohelplearnersgetabetterunderstandingoftheiremotions,theycan
keepanemotionsjournalwheretheynote:Emotion,trigger,response.Learners
becomeawareoftheirdiverseemotionsandareabletoidentifyandnamethem.
Teylearntorecognisetheiremotionaltriggersandcanreflectonpossibleways
torespond.Tisawarenessoftheirownemotionallivescanhelpthemman-
agetheiremotionsbetterandchooseappropriateresponses.Asteachers,wecan
furtherencouragethisprocessbyhavinganemotionalcheck-ineachdaywith
learnerstoseehowtheyaredoingsuchasthroughtheuseofemotionsboards
orstickers.
