goalismeaningfulorimportanttoanindividual.Ofenlarge,distantgoalscansome-
timesseemunattainableandsoitcanhelptobreaksuchgoalsdownintosmaller,
manageablestepsandbecomeconsciousofprogress.Hereteacherscanalsohelp
byusingscafoldingaswellastakingtimetoprovidefocused,constructivepositive
feedback.
tActivity:Onewaytohelplearnerstofeelasenseofaccomplishmentistohelp
themworkwiththeirstrengths.Whenlearnersworkwiththeirstrengths,they
arelikelytogrowinconfidenceandexperiencearangeofpositiveemotions

surveythatstudentscantakeortheycansimplyreadaboutthediferentchar-

ofwaystoworkwiththesestrengthsandusethemmoreintheirdailylives.Tis
activitycanalsobedonebyfocusingexplicitlyonalearner’sstrengthsinlanguage
learning,whattheyaregoodat,andhowtheycouldhelppeerswhostruggle
withtheaspectstheyhaveastheirstrengths.Arelatedwritingtaskcouldinvolve
learnerswritingapersonalintroductionaboutthemselvesusingonlypositive
attributesandcharacterstrengthsortellingastorywhichillustratesoneoftheir
strengthsinaction.

SMARTgoalstechniques.TisreferstosettinggoalsthatareSpecific,Measura-
ble,Achievable,Realistic,andTime-bound.Breakingdownlong-termgoalsinto
SMARTmoreproximalgoalsenhancesthelikelihoodthatstudentswillachieve
theirgoalsbutalso,importantlyfortheirmotivation,thattheyarealsoableto
feelasenseofprogress.Intermsoflong-termgoals,itcanalsohelplearnersto
developavisionofthemselvesachievingwhateverfuturegoal(possiblyL2self)
thattheyenvisageandmakingthisimaginedfutureselfasconcreteanddetailed
aspossible.Teycanthendiscusswhatstepstheycantaketohelpthemmove
