INTRODUCTION
"Technologywillneverreplaceteachers,butteachersusingtechnology
intheirinstructionwillreplacethosewhodonot.”Thismottohasbeen
particularlyinfluentialindefiningtheobjectivesofteachertrainingsincethe
late20thcentury.Togetherwiththeintroductionoftheteacherprofessional
developmentschemeinPolandin2000,andwiththeobligationtodisplay
effectiveuseofInformationandCommunicationTechnologies(ICTs)in
one,steachingasarequirementforpromotiontohigherteacherdevelopment
ranks,theroleoftechnology-assistedteachinghasrisenconsiderably.The
immensepopularityofICTinFLTteachertrainingcourses,organisedby
variousinstitutionssuchasTheBritishCouncilPolandICTforEFLTeachers
Project,INSETTProgramme,regionalandlocalteacherdevelopmentcentres,
hasresultedineducatingsignificantnumbersofin-serviceteachersinhow
tousetechnologyinforeignlanguageinstruction.Governmentalprograms
providingcomputerlabsforschoolssuchasInterkl@sahavealsohelpedtrain
agreaternumberofteachersinbasicICTuseforeducation.
Thoseearlytrainingefforts,asdocumentedinKrajka(2004),weremarked
byarelativelylowlevelofcomputerliteracyoftheparticipants.Thus,building
basiccomputerskills,suchashowtooperatethesystem,processtextsandmake
presentations,wasthemajorobjectiveofthetrainingdeliveredatthattime.The
severelacksinthedigitalliteracyofteachersmeantputtingthemethodologyof
technology-assistedteachingintothebackground,withslightlylesstimeavailable
totrainteachersincreatingInternet-basedlessonsorplanningcomputer-mediated
collaborativeprojects.
Withseveralyearsofintensivetrainingefforts,quiteasignificantnumber
offoreignlanguageteachersinPolandhavereceivedcomputertrainingthathas
enabledthemtoteachwithtechnology;althoughobviouslytodifferentdegrees
dependingonindividualskillsandpreferences,logisticalconsiderationsattheir
schools,attitudestowardstechnology,andanumberofotherfactors.Onthe
contrary,universityeducationatthattimehadnoprovisionsforthedevelopment
ofdigitalteachingskills;therewasnoobligationtoofferICTclassestoteacher
trainees,whilecomputerfacilitiesatfacultiesofhumanitiesorphilologywere
