Theimplementationoftheabovecharacteristicfeaturestoactualtooldesignleads
tothespecificationofanumberofapplications,toolsandservicesthatarelabelled
orcanbetracedasbelongingtotheWeb2.0orthesocialmediaframework.1
Ingeneral,asAbel(2007:20–22)notes,suchnewlearningtechnologiesshould
addresseitheroneormoreoftheseissues:
•Enhancedeffectivenessofstudentstudy.
•EasyInternetpublishingofcontentandorganisationofcoursesandlearning
strategiesforthemajorityoffaculty.
•Mergingofclassroomandonlineenvironments.
•Formativeassessmentvialearninginteractionsbetweenfacultyandstudents.
•Contentmanagementoffaculty-generated,publisher,andrecordedrich
media.
Similarly,Molina(2006)givesadditionalfeaturesthatparticularsoftware
solutionsneedtomeetinordertoclearlyrepresentthesocialmediamovement,
ratherthanjustusingthelabelasamarketingdevicetostandoutfromits
counterparts.Thus,accordingtoMolina(2006:114),Web2.0applications:
•"arecollaborative,”withsharing/taggingcollectives,blogs,wikis,online
wordprocessorstakingcollaborationasacentraltheme;
•"usethin,cross-platformtechnologyontheclientside,”withtheonly
requirementforauserbeingaWebbrowser;
•"thinkbig,”providingfunctionalitycomparabletocommerciallyavailable
officeapplicationsandoperatingsystems,allaccessibleonline;
•"arefree,”thatisfreetochooseandfreetochange,tailoredtothe
circumstances(alsoMcCarty,2007);
•"areconstantlyupgraded,”withupgradesconductedcontinuallyinsmall
increments,oftenunnoticeablyintheinterface;
•"arehighlyinterwoven,”drawingonotherWeb2.0applicationstocreate
newmash-uptools.
ThesignificantproliferationofWeb2.0applicationsforeasypublication,
remixinganddistributionofdigitalcontent(text,image,videoandsound)
hasenabledthecreationofnewcollaborativelearningenvironments(Nagy
&Bigum,2007),inwhich"learnerscanbecreative,critical,constructiveand
becomeproducers(publishers)oftheirownperspectivesinformedbyaudience
andidentity”(p.81).Theeducationalchallengethusposedwillconsiston
theonehandintheselection,trainingandconsolidationofparticularWeb2.0
toolsandservicesforclassroomuse,while,ontheotherhand,inreflecting
