accordingtopredeﬁnedcriteria.

Asremarkedearlier,thepowerofopensourcetechnologymeanseasy

mixingofdifferentapplicationsbyprogrammerstocreateamash-up,whichis

awebsiteoraWebapplicationthatcombinescontentfrommorethanone(Web

2.0)source.Alexander(2006)pointsoutthat"giventheWeb2.0ethosofsharing

contentacrossservices,andtheimportanceofsocialsoftware,itisonlylogical

thatcrossbreedsofnewsandsocialsoftwarehaveemerged”(p.40).Theauthor

wasusuallythecasethatfree-of-chargefunctionalitieswereseverelylimited,

andpremiumversionswouldhavetobepurchasedtouseparticulartoolsas

learningandteachingenvironments.AnotherproblemofWeb2.0toolswastheir

ephemerealnature–manyapplicationsandonlineservicesstoppedtheirservice,

wereacquiredandclosedfreeaccessbyothercompanies,or,ﬁnally,mergedwith

otherservices.Alltheseprocessesmightjeopardisetheeffortinvestedbythe

teacherandlearnersintocreatingresourcesforuseinthelearningprocess.

TheeffectthatWeb2.0technologieshavehadontheirusers,aswellastheeffect

thattheusershavehadonthetechnologies,isinestimable.Therapidexpansion

ofWeb2.0toolsandapproachesintheeverydaylivesofstudents,accordingto

Thompson(2007),meansthatthepreferencesofnewergenerationsoflearnersas

regardsmoreextensivetechnologyusebyteacherswillbeevenmorepronounced.

ThiscallsforsomereﬂectiononthelearnersandteacherswithintheWeb2.0

framework,tocometoanunderstandingofwhatinstructionalstrategiesonthe

onehandandteachertrainingprogrammesontheotherwouldneedtobeadopted

forseamlessintegrationofthenewtechnologiesintheaverageteacher,stoolkit.
