thatitceasestoexistasaseparateconceptandfieldfordiscussion”(Bax,2003:
23).Instead,computersshouldbesecondarytolearning,servingthepreviously
analysedneedsoflearners.
Theimportanceofconnectionistmodelsfosteredbycomputersimulationsand
artificialintelligenceindevelopingbottom-uptextprocessingwasunderlinedas
earlyasin2000byChodkiewicz.Thelearningtheoryofconnectivism(Siemens,
2004),whichintegratestechnologyandconnectionmakinginlearningactivities
tomakestudentsderivecompetencefromformingnetworks,startstogainground,
resultinginanewdimensionofComputer-MediatedCommunication.
GiventhediverseapproachestohistoricaldevelopmentofCALL,itseems
anupdatedperspectiveisneeded.Newmodesoflearningopenedbywidespread
availabilityofWeb2.0tools,forinstancemlearning,blendedlearning,social
networking,callforre-assessmentofbothWarschauer,sandBax,stheories.
Itseemsthefuturemightnotnecessarilybe"IntelligentCALL”asWarschauer
thoughtitwouldbe,asIntelligentCALLapplicationsaccountonlyforasmallpart
oftechnology-assistedteaching.Ontheotherhand,themovetonormalisationof
CALLasproposedbyBaxismorevisibleatschools,withtechnologysuchas
multimediacomputersandInteractiveWhiteboardsnolongerviewedasanovelty
creatingthe‘wowfactor.,

Theconstanttechnologicaldevelopmentreflectedbytheemergenceofnewtools,
softwaresolutionsandinterfacestriggerstheneedtoredefinethewayresearchers
conceptualisetechnology,inordertodiscernitsmostappropriateeducational
applications.AsfarasCALLisconcerned,especiallyduringtheIntegrativeCALL
phase(WarschauerandHealey,1998),therapidanduncontrollablegrowthofthis
mediumattheturnofthe21stcenturyhasledtosuggestionsonhowthestages
ofdevelopmentofthemediumshouldbeidentified.Hencethedistinctionoftwo
phasesinthedevelopmentoftheInternetsofar(Web1.0andWeb2.0),together
withsomesignpostsforathirdgenerationtocome.Thepresentsectionofthis
