yearsearlier,ceasedtoexist;andtheFacultyofScienceandtheFine
Artsalongwiththeotherfourfacultiesdisappearedwithit.Itonlyre-
gaineditsindependencein1915,althoughitwasrevivedbrieflyunder
thenameoftheCentralCollegeortheMainSchoolbetween1862and
1869.TemajorityoftheUniversity’streasures,lostinthenineteenth
centuryandreturnedafterthePolish-BolshevikWarin1920,werede-
stroyedbytheNaziGermansduringtheSecondWorldWar.Yet,despite
theseterriblelosses,therebuiltCampusatKrakowskiePrzedmieścieand
thesplendidlyreconstructedBotanicGardeninAlejeUjazdowskiewith
itsAstronomicalObservatoryhaveretainedtheirmonumentalcharacter
andareamongthemostmagicalandpicturesqueplacesinWarsaw.
LikethescholarsactiveinmanyEuropeanandAmericanuni-
versities–namely,Cambridge,OxfordandHarvard–thefoundersof
Warsaw’sUniversitywereintentonfulfillingthenobleidealsofanin-
stitutionofhighereducationwhichwouldhaveitsownartcollection
thatwouldplayavitalroleintheteachingprocess.Forthefirsttimein
thehistoryofPolishartisticculture,theworksproducedbytheartists
whoweretheUniversity’sprofessorsandstudentswereshownatpublic
exhibitionswhichenjoyedtremendouspopularity.Fortunately,several
nineteenth-centurypaintings,prints,anddrawingshavesurvivedand
giveusanexcellentideaofwhatthoseeventslookedlike,helpingusto
understandthetruedignityandprestigeofWarsaw’sfirstUniversity.
Teseenlightenmentidealswereinvokedevenaslateasintheinterwar
period,whentheUniversityacquiredRenaissancemedals–subsequent-
lydestroyedduringthewar–andextendeditspatronagetotheverysuc-
cessfularchaeologicalexcavationsatEdfuinEgypt(1936–1939).Tese
ambitiousplanswerethwartedrepeatedlybecauseofPoland’scomplicat-
edandoftentragicfortunes,andthefateofWarsaw,whichwascruelly
pillagedaftertheNovemberUprising,andalmostrazedtotheground
duringtheSecondWorldWar.TeimpactofWarsaw’sfirstUniversity
–which,byandlarge,continuedthetraditionofKingStanisławAu-
gustus’artisticpatronage–onthecity’sandPoland’sartisticculturewas
considerable.5TenumerousUniversitybuildings,erectedinlaterperi-
odsandlocatedinvariouspartsofWarsaw,playedavitalpartinshaping
thecity’sarchitecturallandscape.
Tisbook,richlyillustratedwithlittle-knownorhithertoun-
publishedmaterials,isaddressedtoawidecircleofreaders.Itcanbe
readasanintroductiontotheUniversity’shistory,andasaguidetoits
historicmonumentsandcollectionofplastercasts,aswellastheengrav-
ingsanddrawingshousedintheUniversityLibraryPrintRoom.
