1862(1865).TeyalsofocusonthehistoryoftheUniversitybuildings,
itsemblem,andothersymbols.Tefollowingchaptersapproachvarious
aspectsoftheUniversity’sscientificandintellectualachievementsinthe
contextofPoland’shistory.Tus,thebookgivesanaccountofthemost
importanteventscoveringtwohundredyearsoftheUniversity’shistory
andintroducesprofilesofitsrectors,outstandingprofessorsandgradu-
ates.Tereaderwillfindthenamesofscientistsandscholarsactivein
almostallfieldsofhumanknowledge,manyofwhomwerenotonly
academicsofworldwiderenown,butalsoprofessedloversandconnois-
seursofart.ItisworthrememberingthatatuniversitiesandtheUni-
versityofWarsawisnoexceptionaninterestinarchitectureandartistic
creativityoftentransgressestheboundariesbetweenthevariousfaculties.
Asanexample,FryderykSkarbek,ProfessorofEconomics,lecturedat
theFacultyofLawandwasalsoagiftedpainterwhohelpedorganize
theUniversity’sartexhibitions.Studentsofthissamefacultyincluded
ZygmuntKrasiński,anoutstandingpoet,andEdwardRastawiecki,au-
thorofthethree-volumeSłownikmalarzówpolskich[DictionaryofPol-
ishPainters,1850–1857],animportantpublicationonthefinearts.
Ofequalvaluearethesourcematerials,hithertounpublished,which
relatetothehistoryoftheUniversity’sartisticculture,collectedand
reviewedbyFeliksPawełJarocki(1790–1865),ProfessorofZoology
(seeFig.47),andlatercuratoroftheUniversitybuildings,aswellassim-
ilarmaterialscollectedbyAugustRomanKręcki(1843–1920),aclerk
attheWarsaw-ViennaRailway,studentoftheCentralCollegeandpar-
ticipantintheJanuaryUprisingof1863.6Jarockiistheauthorofthein-
valuableKronikaPałacuKaźmierowskiegozostatnich34lat(1812–1846)
[ChronicleoftheKazimierzowskiPalaceinthepast34years(1812–
1846)],whereasKręckicollecteduniquematerialsontheSchoolofFine
Arts.Teworkofbothscholars,especiallyJarocki’smanuscript,willbe
referredtorepeatedlyinthepresentpublication.
TetaleofthehistoryandlegacyoftheUniversityofWarsaw
wouldnotbecompletewithoutinformationontheBotanicGarden,
thenewLibraryandtheuniversitybuildingslocatedoutsidethecen-
tralcampusatKrakowskiePrzedmieście.BoththenewLibraryand
thebuildingsattheOchotaCampus,i.e.theCeNT1,CeNT2and
CeNT3,boastfascinatingarchitecturalformandexcellentspatialsolu-
