ThomasBradwardine(ca1295-1349)in1321wasaBachelorofArtsatBal-
liolCollege,in1323hebecameafellowofMertonCollege,Oxfordwhere
heprobablyremainedforthenexttwelveyears.Inthesameyearhebe-
cameMasterofArts,in1333abachelorandin1340aDoctorintheology.
LikeKilvington,Bradwardinebelongedtothecircleoffriendsandcourti-
ersofRicharddeBurywhointroducedhimtotheroyalcourtofEdward
III.BradwardineactivelyparticipatedinthelifeoftheChurchandtheroyal
court.Hiscareerasanecclesiasticbeganin1333whenhewasmadeCanon
atLincolnCathedralandwastobecrownedwithhiselectionin1349as
ArchbishopofCanterbury.AsthechancellorofSt.Paul’sCathedralinLon-
don,Bradwardinewasappointedroyalchaplainin1337and,probably,the
king’sconfessor.HeaccompaniedEdwardinhistravelstoFlandersand
Franceduringthecampaignof1346.Immediatelyafterhisepiscopalcon-
secration,whichwasheldinAvignon,BradwardinereturnedtoEnglandto
assumehisposition,yethediedamonthlater,onthe26thofAugust1349,
asavictimofthefrstwaveoftheBlackDeath.21
ThomasBradwardineauthoredmanysignifcantworks,whichcover
anumberofscholarlydomains.Hisinsightandintellectualinquisi-
tivenessearnedhimthetitleofDoctorprofundusandamentioninChau-
cer’sCanterburyTales.Thephilosophicalworksofhisthathavebeen
preservedtoourtimearethefollowing:twotreatisesinmathemat-
ics:SpeculativeArithmetic(Arithmeticaspeculativa)andSpeculativeGeometry
(Geometriaspeculativa),22anumberoflogicaltreatises(allwrittenbefore
1328),afamousworkonthetheoryofmotionTreatiseonRatiosofVelocities
inMotions(Tractatusdeproportionibusvelocitatuminmotibus),writtenin1328,23
