uscriptcopyreflectssuchanorder(withoneexception),however.Nev-
ertheless,sinceJohnMurdochandEdithSyllaintheirconcisesummary
ofRichardSwinesheadtreatiseacceptedtheabove-presentedorder,to
avoidpossibleconfusionwechoosenottochangeithere.Closeranaly-
sisofthesechapters,aswellastheevidenceofthepreservedmanus-
cripts,suggestthattheorderandthedivisionoftheseparts,notmen-
tioningthetitles,asintendedbytheauthorweredifferent.Itisenough
tonoteherethat,e.g.,thechapterDeactioneluminosishouldbetakenas
anintegralpartofthetreatiseDeluminosis,andthechapterDepotentia
rei,similarly,asanintegralpartofthetreatiseDereaction.72Thetreatise
XIDelocoelementiincludesafamousdiscussionontheimaginarycaseof
along,heavyrodtraversingthecentreoftheEarth.73Thehypothesis,
formulatedbyMurdochandSyllaonthebasisofthefactthatchapters
XIVandXVIareabsentintheoldestknownhandwrittencopiesofthe
Libercalculationum,thatthesewerewrittenlaterthantheremainingones
