factodominionofphilosophyforethicsespeciallyinLife
Sciences;
-therestrictedself-imageofscienceasanethicallyunbiased,
morallyabsoluteneutralobserverofthenaturalworld.
Thefirstdoomedideadealswiththeassumedprimacyandal-
legedmonopoleofphilosophicalbioethicsinmoralquestions
ofscience.Followingmainlyacademictraditions,somehowsci-
enceusuallysharestheassumptionthatsolelyPhilosophyand
itstraditionaldiscipline“ethics”
,butnotscienceitselfcanclarify
moralquestionsofscience.Thisself-restraintisremarkable,as
consequentlyformeanstoletothersdecideonscientificwork.
Thetheoryofthehegemonyofphilosophyinethicsofscience
mayberight,andworkswellinacademicunitsseparatedfrom
scienceFaculties.Anyhow,seenunderpracticalaspectsofdo-
ingthemorallyrightinscience,strongandseriousreservations
havetobeannounced.
Especiallyoutside,butactuallyalsoinsidetheacademicworld
ofsciencesandthehumanities,itisgenerallydoubtedthatphi-
losophycanbeofpracticalhelp.Forgoodreasons,evenwithin
theacademicworld,theimageofphilosophyasadisciplineis
bothnotdevelopmentalandnotpractical.Actuallyphilosophy
isnothingbutdealingrepetitivelywith“theeternalrecurrence
ofthesame”.Forthousandsofyearsithasbeenatheoretical
preoccupationwiththesameproblemswithoutcomingupto
finalsolutions.
So,philosophymaydiscussbioethicalproblems-butitdoesnot
solvethem.Itisactuallynotevenresponsibleforthem,andno
philosopherhastodowhathesuggeststobetherightthingto
do.Ifitconcernskillingananimalinresearch,toinformpatients
honestlyaboutunfavourableprognosesorindramaticcases,to
turnoffalifesupport-thephilosopherkeepsasafedistance
torealityingeneral,andtherealityinscienceandmedicine.
