Ironically,itisespeciallythesuccessesofapplicablesciencesup-
portingthefactoidself-imageofbasicscience,tobeaneutralob-
serverandtheindispensiblekeeperofindivisibletruthsofthe
materialworld.
Thelineoftherespectiveargumentationisthefollowing:Well-
directedandsuccessfulmanipulationsofnaturalprocesseslead
totheconclusionthatsciencepossesses“absolutetrue”knowl-
edgeonspecificbasicsettingsandmechanismofthematerial
world.1Ifsciencedidnothavetruebasicknowledge,specificma-
nipulationssimplywouldnotworkout.Thisway,itisapplica-
blesciencethatconfirmstheimportanceofbasicscience.
Nevertheless,thefundamentofthecurrenthypeonLifeSci-
encesistobeperceivedintheirapplications-notknowledgeas
such.Basicsciencemayregrettobenumbertwointhatkindof
ranking,butthankstothatitalsoreceivesfinancialsupportand
considerationonanunprecedentedscale.Withoutthesuccesses
oftheinnovativeengineeringworkofapplicableLifeSciences,
probablytheunprofitableknowledgeofbasicsciencewould
generallybeevaluatedlessworthy-perhapsintheverysame
wayscienceevaluatesphilosophicalknowledge:acultural“nice-
to-havefeature”-atthemost.
However,thementioned“classic”proudself-awarenessofall
science,tobethebearerandkeeperofall“realknowledgeof
facts”
,makesitactuallydifficulttobecomesensitivetoanykind
ofethics.Thekeeperoftruthdoesnotneedtocareformorality.
Truthistheuntouchablenon-plus-ultraissue.Truthisallegedly
beyondgoodandevil,andsois“thestewardoftruth”:science.
Scienceclaimstobetheonlydisciplinecomingtoabsolute
truthsontheworldthatexistssolelyasfactuality.Theworld
accordingtoscienceisallthatisthefactualcase,2andscience
