calmethodology.Howscienceperceivesit,neithertheworld
norscienceitselfrequiresanyotherbutscientificevaluation.
Thisleadstotheconclusiontobemorallyasuntouchableas
theworld:Neitherfactualtruthnoritsmessengercanbeques-
tionedmorally.Forscience,anyattemptofmoralevaluation
appearsnotjustanunscientificattackonscience,butevenas
somethingcompletelyirrational.Sometimes,thisattitudere-
semblesaquasireligious,godlikeaxiomofself-identify3that
requiresneitherfurtherexplanationnoranyquestionaboutits
make-up:Theworldiswhatitis,andsoisscience:the“herald”
-nottheprophet-ofitsnature.
Inaparticularway,thisnaivepositivisticapproachtakesitstoll:
scienceisself-containedandmissesanimportantpoint.Inour
time,atleastinWesternsocieties,itisnot“theworld”
,andalso
neitherscientifictruthnorscientificmethodologyassuchthat
raisesethicaldoubtsinthefirstplace.4
Mostofallthesearethemanipulationsofnaturalprocessesdone
byscienceandconnectedwiththesesocietal-andevenpossible
biologicalconsequencesthatimplyethicalconcerns!
Startingfromthisbackground,eventhefundamentsofscience
havebecomeobjectsofethicalevaluations-andsometimeseven
moraldoubtsconcerningthevalueofscienceingeneralhave
occurred.Thefactofvariousmorallyunwantedapplicationsof
scienceraisesthequestionwhethertheunderlyingscientific
knowledgeisinanycasedesirable,andbeyondthatevenmore
fundamentalquestioncanarise:Istheknowledgeofsciencereal-
lywhatthemankindneedsandwantstoreceivewhenthesevere
consequencesposearealdanger?ThepowerofLifeSciencesto
changenaturalprocessesandtomanipulatenatureastheobvi-
ouspurposesofsciencebuildthefundamentofallmoralcritics
onscience-bothindetailandgeneral.
