said.Alltheseproblemswithcommunicationunderstoodhereasatrans-
lationofone’sintentionsintowordsorinterpretingwordsofothersas
havingaparticularmeaningoccuronaneverydaybasiswithinonelan-
guage.Needlesstosaytheriskgetshigherwhenincommunicationone
hastosurmountbarriersoflanguageandculture.Morefrequentlythan
not,however,peoplemanagetogettheirmessageacrossandverbal
communication,providingthatitispossibleandgrantedbynature,isstill
themostwidespreadandeconomicalmeansofexchanginginformation
andsharingknowledgeinhumaninteraction.Indeed,thehumandesireto
communicatemustbeextremelystrongtobeabletocrossbarrierscreated
byahandicap,differentmodalitiesorforeignlanguages.Tomaximizeour
chancesweemployawealthofmeansincludingmuchmorethanlan-
guageitself,gestures,facialexpressions,prosodicfeaturesoftonein
speechandotherdevicesreferringtoformandstructureinwriting.
Theroleoflanguageasacommunicativedeviceallowingfor‘mind-
sharing’withinagivenlanguagecommunity(Donald1991,2001)cannot
beunderestimated.AspointedoutbyDonald(2006)knowingalanguage
allowsustopluginintothecommunity’scognitiveculturalnetworkin-
cludingastoreofknowledgeaccumulatedthroughhistoryandrecorded
inlanguage(writtenrecords,books,etc.).DavidCrystal’s(1986)state-
mentthatlanguageisthekeywhichopensthedoorisavalidmetaphor
whichexpressestheroleoflanguageinprovidingaccesstoknowledge
recordedinthelanguage.Toshareknowledgewithanotherlanguage
community,tointeract,dobusinessandco-existwithspeakersofother
languageswehavetolearnforeignlanguagesorhiretranslators.Itisin
thisexpandedinternationalcommunitythattranslationbecomesmore
tangibleandwidespreadasanaspectofeverydaylife.
