linguisticsitselfcouldbenefitfromthefindingsoftranslatology”(Uwajeh,
1994:287).Ifsofarlinguisticshasnotdisplayedmuchinterestinthehuman
abilitytouselanguagesinordertotranslatethenextmostviablediscipline
totakeupgenuineinterestintranslationskill/skillsisTSitself.
1.7.2.TranslationStudies
TranslationStudiesasafullyindependentdiscipline(withcurrentlyawide
rangeofinterest,seeBakerandSaldanha2009)startedtoestablishitselfin
the1980sfollowingaseminalworkofJamesHolmes(seethecollectionof
hislectureseditedbyBroeck1994).Followingthedeparturefromlinguis-
tics,translationscholarsdevotedconsiderableattentiontotheseaspectsof
translationwhichhadnot,andcouldnotbeinvestigatedwithinthecon-
straintsoflinguistics(seeGentzler1993,Snell-Hornby1988,Toury1995,
HatimandMason1990).Thesenewareasofinvestigationincludedintercul-
turalissues(Snell-Hornby1988,BassnettandLefevere1990),thequestion
ofnorms(Hermans1991,Toury1995),functionalapproachwiththeskopos
theory(ReissandVermeer1984),whichshiftedattentionfromtheSL
(sourcelanguage)texttotheTL(targetlanguage)textsteeringfarfromthe
muchhatedconceptofequivalence(seeSnell-Hornby2006:152,Bassnett
1996).Newschoolsofthoughtfocusingonthefunctionthattranslatedtexts
playinthetargetculture,suchasthe“ManipulationSchool”ortheschoolof
DescriptiveTranslationStudiesandDeconstructionismappeared,andnew
theorieswereformulated(seeHolzMänttäri1984).
WiththemapofthedisciplineofTSdraftedoutbyHolmes(1988)the
newresearcharea“shouldemergeasanempiricalscience:mainsplitinto
Purevs.Appliedbranches”(Toury1995:9)implyinginthisway“a
properdivisionoflabourbetweenvariouskindsofscholarlyactivity”
(Toury1995:9)inthesamemanneritwasdoneinlinguistics.Toury
(1995)inhisinfluentialbook,DescriptiveTranslationStudiesandBe-
yondinsistedthatthedivisionbetweenthepureandappliedbranches
shouldbekeptclear.Inhisownwords,
Iwouldhardlysubscribetotheviewthat(epitomizedbyPeterNew-
markbutsharedbysomany)that“translationtheory’smainconcernis
todetermineappropriatetranslationmethods”(Newmark1981:19);
definitelynotanymorethan“linguisticsmainconcernistodetermine
