1.7.Thescopeofsystematicresearchintranslationexpertisedevelopment
Thereasonsfortherelativelackofresearchintotranslationexpertisede-
velopmentarecomplexandrequiretakingahistoricalinterdisciplinary
perspectivewhenlookingatthosedisciplineswhichhave,orshouldhave
aviableinterestinthestudyoftranslationingeneral.Firstandforemost,
thedisciplineofTranslationStudiesisentirelydevotedtothestudyof
translationinitsallpossibleaspectsconcerningboththeoryandpractice.
Since,howevertranslationisaformofcommunicationandinitsverbal
formisdealingwithlanguageitbelongstotheareaofappliedlinguistics,
sociolinguistics,psycholinguisticsandcognitivepsychology.Letus
brieflyinquiretowhatextentthetopicoftranslationasahumanskillhas
beeninvestigatedinthethreemostrelevantdisciplines:linguistics,Trans-
lationStudies,psycholinguisticsandcognitivepsychology.
1.7.1.Linguistics
Linguisticsisadisciplinewithwellestablishedrootsdevotedtothestudy
oflanguagewithabroadspectrumofinterestincludingtheoreticaland
appliedlinguistics.Historically,italsoencompassedthestudyoftransla-
tionbutintheearly1980sitwasconsideredtoprovideatoonarrowre-
searchparadigmtostudymultipleaspectsinvolvedintranslation(Berman
1989).Followingtheestablishmentofthenewindependentdiscipline
namedTranslationStudies(Snell-Hornby1988)thetopicoftranslationin
boththeoreticalandempiricalstudiescarriedoutbylinguistshasrarely
receivedattention.AlthoughmajordebatesechoedvonHumboldt’scon-
victionthattheremustbeamidpointsharedbyalllanguages(i.e.Chom-
sky1965
4),thefocuswasalwaysonstructuresratherthanonpeoplewho
usethem.Contrastiveanalysis(Lado1957)studiedhowthepostulateof
UniversalGrammar(UG)wasdifferentlyrealizedinvariouslanguages.
