O’Halloran(2016,3),“multimodalitymarksadeparturefromthetra-
ditionaloppositionofCverbal’andCnon-verbal’communication,which
presumesthattheverbalisprimaryandthatallothermeansofmak-
ingmeaningcanbedealtwithbyoneandthesameterm.”Itfollows
thatsense-makingentails“theproductionof[integrated]multimodal
wholes”(2016,3).
Cantheideaofmultimodalitybeincorporatedintoa
CL
-basedframe-
worktotheinter-lingualtranslationofJulian’sShewings?Accordingto
Lewandowska-Tomaszczyk(2015,21;italicsoriginal),
Semioticapproachestolanguage,i.e.approacheswhichembracelin-
guisticandnon-linguistic(visual,auditory)levels,assumeexactlythat
itisthetotalityofsuchpropertiesthatmakesmeaningscommunicable.In
thisrespect,translationcannotbeviewedasthetransferoflinguistic
meaningsalone.Optimally,itshouldbetherendition,vialinguistic
means,oftheSLcultural,literaryconventionsandthetotalityofback-
groundfactstothe
TL
culture.Thisassumption,however,isnotaviable
option.TheSLandTLsystemsarenotcommensurableintheirtotality.
Theuniversalsemioticshypothesisisthenuntenableasapossible
solutiontotheproblemsofmeaningequivalenceandtranslatability.
Whatispracticedinsteadthoughisasetofstrategiescompensating
forthemeaninglossesandtransformations.
Partialcommensurabilityof
SL
and
TL
systemsmeansbalancingbetween
linguistic/culturaluniversalismandrelativism.However,situatingthe
questionwithinthegroundedcognitionframeworkappearsarelevant
solution.Specifically,therelatedideaofthemultimodalgestaltoflocally
situated,individualandcollectiveexperiencecanserveasaviablerefer-
encepointguidingtheadjustmentofTLparametersinthere-construal
oftheSLconceptualcontent.InCL,itisnotonlytheconceptualcontent
thatmatters,butequallyrelevantisthelinguisticformthatgivesriseto
therecipient’sconstructionofmeaning.Tetranslator’schoiceofspecific
