Interpretingistheearliestformoftranslation,andstillomnipresent.Adam
BednarekandPaulinaPietrzakprovideausefulclassificationofinterpreting
types,dividedaccordingtothesocialcontextinvolved(suchascommunity,
conference,escort,mediainterpreting)andthemannerofdelivery(especially
simultaneous,consecutiveandwhisperedinterpreting).Eachtypehasitsown
importantfeatures,andposesinterestingtasksforpractice,teaching,andre-
search.Theauthorsalsomentioncrucialdifferencesbetweeninterpretationand
typicaltranslation,pointingtomethodologicalconsequencesofthesediffer-
ences,andpointtothenecessarymentalskills(suchasconcentration,mnemonic
capacity)whichcontributetoagoodperformancebytheprofessionalinterpreter.
PaulinaPietrzakinvestigatestranslationcompetence,stressingfromthe
outsettheelusivenessofthenotion.Therelevantcomponentscontributingtoan
appropriatelevelofcompetenceinclude,amongothers,skillsascomplexand
divergentaslinguisticcompetenceinthelanguagesinvolved,culturalcompe-
tence,factualcompetenceinspecializedfieldsandsubfields,andtechnicalcom-
petence.Pietrzakdistinguishesprocess-orientedtranslationcompetencefrom
product-orientedtranslatorcompetenceanddiscussestheconsequencesofthis
distinctionfortranslatoreducation.

tionsandchallengesoftheAnglicizationoflexisfortranslatorsandtranslator
training.HeprovidesdataillustratingthepresenceofEnglishlexicalitemsin

andinconversationalPolish.
Thereexistnumerousmetaphorsoftranslation(asdiversifiedas,forin-
stancebridge-building,bordercrossing,openingdoors,changingclothes);inthe
openingquoteWittgensteincomparestranslatingfromonelanguageintoanother
toamathematicaltask.Thiscomparisonpointstothecreativeaspectofthepro-
cessontheonehand,andtocertainrigorousconstraintsontheother.Contribu-
torstothepresentvolumestressthecreativeaspectoftranslation,butalsofocus
ondifferentconstraints,standardsandchallengestotranslationpractice.
