Ithasbeen20yearssincewebeganworkonthefirsteditionofInterchanges,
acontinuationofProfessorZygmuntWrześniowski,sseriesofbooksonexpress-
waydesign.PublishedbyWKŁin1975,thefirstbookintheseriesMotorways
coveredthreeareas:planningmotorwaynetworksandmotorwaygeometricdesign;
economicanalysesandmotorwayconstructiontechnology.
Thesecondbookwasdevotedsolelytoroadinterchangeswithgeometric
designasitsprimaryfocus.Ithadasectiononcomputertechnologyasdesignaid,
anoveltyatthetime.TherewasinformationabouttheAmericansoftwareCOGO
andhowitcanbeusedonthePolishcomputerODRA,1300.Thesoftwarewas
agreathelpwithtediouscalculationsofrouteandinterchangegeometry.Inthe
eightieswhenPCswereintroducednewprogrammesweredevelopedallowing
interactionwiththecomputer.Significantprogresswasmadeingraphicswithbetter
printersandplotters,agreathelpwithrecordingandvisualisingtheresultsofcom-
putations.Diamondtyperoundaboutstoreplacechannelledjunctionswereaninte-
restingadditiontothebook.
Revisedandenlarged,thesecondeditionwastitledRoadandMotorway
Interchangesandpublishedsixyearslater.Thechaptersoninterchangeclassifica-
tionandgeometryremainedpracticallyunchanged,aclassicroaddesignstandard.
Butthereweresignificantadditionstothegraphicpartofthebookwithcolour
photographsofinterchanges.Thebiggestsubject-matterchangewasnewinforma-
tionaboutcomputeraidedinterchangedesign,givingthebasisforplanningtrans-
portsystems,fromtheOrigin-Destinationmatrixandwaystomodelit,tovehicle
streamdistribution.
Thiseditionhasacompletelynewchapteronmoderncomputerroadand
interchangedesign.TheadvanceofITsincethelasteditionhasintroducednew
methodsfornearlyallofcomputerdesign.Thereisanewchapteronintelligent
transportsystems(ITS),whichreallyprovideselectronicsupportforroadnetwork
operation,improvesitsefficiencyandkeepsroadusersinformed.
