Inthissectionwewillgiveashortoutlineofthebasicworksconcerned
withthenotionofwordorderchange.Wewillstartwiththeendofthe
nineteenthcenturyandfinishwiththeperiodclosertothepresentday.Since
wehavenothadadirectaccesstomanyofthebooks,wearegoingtodraw
onsomesecondarysourcesandorganisethissectionthewaythatcanbe
foundthere.Wearenotgoingtomakeadetaileddescriptionoftheworks
onwordorderbutwilljustmentionthemostinfluentialauthorsandtheba-
