OntheseventhdayGodfinishedhisworkwhichhehaddone;and
herestedontheseventhdayfromallhisworkwhichhehaddone.2.3
Godblessedtheseventhday,andmadeitholy,becauseherested
initfromallhisworkofcreationwhichhehaddone.
2.4Thisisthehistoryofthegenerationsoftheheavensandoftheearth
whentheywerecreated,inthedaythatYahweh[“Yahweh”isGod’s
properName,sometimesrendered“LORD”(allcaps)inother
translations.]Godmadetheearthandtheheavens.2.5Noplantofthe
fieldwasyetintheearth,andnoherbofthefieldhadyetsprungup;
forYahwehGodhadnotcausedittorainontheearth.Therewasnot
amantotilltheground,2.6butamistwentupfromtheearth,and
wateredthewholesurfaceoftheground.2.7YahwehGodformedman
fromthedustoftheground,andbreathedintohisnostrilsthebreath
oflife;andmanbecamealivingsoul.2.8YahwehGodplantedagarden
eastward,inEden,andthereheputthemanwhomhehadformed.2.9
OutofthegroundYahwehGodmadeeverytreetogrowthat
ispleasanttothesight,andgoodforfood,includingthetreeoflife
inthemiddleofthegardenandthetreeoftheknowledgeofgoodand
evil.2.10AriverwentoutofEdentowaterthegarden;andfromthere
itwasparted,andbecamethesourceoffourrivers.2.11Thenameofthe
firstisPishon:itflowsthroughthewholelandofHavilah,wherethere
isgold;2.12andthegoldofthatlandisgood.Bdellium[or,aromatic
resin]andonyxstonearealsothere.2.13Thenameofthesecondriver
isGihon.Itisthesameriverthatflowsthroughthewholeland
ofCush.2.14ThenameofthethirdriverisHiddekel.Thisistheone
whichflowsinfrontofAssyria.ThefourthriveristheEuphrates.2.15
YahwehGodtooktheman,andputhimintothegardenofEden
tocultivateandkeepit.2.16YahwehGodcommandedtheman,saying,
“Youmayfreelyeatofeverytreeofthegarden;2.17butyoushallnot
eatofthetreeoftheknowledgeofgoodandevil;forinthedaythat
youeatofit,youwillsurelydie.”
2.18YahwehGodsaid,“Itisnotgoodforthemantobealone.Iwill
makehimahelpercomparableto[or,suitablefor,orappropriatefor.]
him.”2.19OutofthegroundYahwehGodformedeveryanimalofthe
field,andeverybirdofthesky,andbroughtthemtothemantosee
whathewouldcallthem.Whateverthemancalledeveryliving
