50.1Josephfellonhisfather’sface,weptonhim,andkissedhim.50.2
Josephcommandedhisservants,thephysicians,toembalmhisfather;
andthephysiciansembalmedIsrael.50.3Fortydayswerefulfilledfor
him,forthatishowmanythedaysittakestoembalm.TheEgyptians
weptforhimforseventydays.
50.4Whenthedaysofweepingforhimwerepast,Josephspoketothe
houseofPharaoh,saying,“IfnowIhavefoundfavorinyoureyes,
pleasespeakintheearsofPharaoh,saying,50.5‘Myfathermade
meswear,saying,“Behold,Iamdying.Burymeinmygravewhich
IhavedugformyselfinthelandofCanaan.”Nowtherefore,pleaselet
megoupandburymyfather,andIwillcomeagain.’”
50.6Pharaohsaid,“Goup,andburyyourfather,justlikehemadeyou
swear.”
50.7Josephwentuptoburyhisfather;andwithhimwentupallthe
servantsofPharaoh,theeldersofhishouse,alltheeldersoftheland
ofEgypt,50.8AllthehouseofJoseph,hisbrothers,andhisfather’s
house.Onlytheirlittleones,theirflocks,andtheirherds,theyleft
inthelandofGoshen.50.9Therewentupwithhimbothchariotsand
horsemen.Itwasaverygreatcompany.50.10Theycametothethreshing
floorofAtad,whichisbeyondtheJordan,andtheretheylamented
withaverygreatandseverelamentation.Hemournedforhisfather
sevendays.50.11Whentheinhabitantsoftheland,theCanaanites,saw
themourninginthefloorofAtad,theysaid,“Thisisagrievous
mourningbytheEgyptians.”ThereforeitsnamewascalledAbel
Mizraim,whichisbeyondtheJordan.50.12Hissonsdidtohimjust
ashecommandedthem,50.13forhissonscarriedhimintotheland
ofCanaan,andburiedhiminthecaveofthefieldofMachpelah,which
Abrahamboughtwiththefield,forapossessionofaburialsite,from
EphrontheHittite,beforeMamre.50.14JosephreturnedintoEgypt—he,
andhisbrothers,andallthatwentupwithhimtoburyhisfather,after
hehadburiedhisfather.
50.15WhenJoseph’sbrotherssawthattheirfatherwasdead,theysaid,
“ItmaybethatJosephwillhateus,andwillfullypayusbackforall
theevilwhichwedidtohim.”50.16TheysentamessagetoJoseph,
saying,“Yourfathercommandedbeforehedied,saying,50.17‘Youshall
tellJoseph,“Nowpleaseforgivethedisobedienceofyourbrothers,and
