researchpapers,preciselybecausemanytasksinvolvetextanalysis.Studentsare
alsorequiredtosearchformodeltextsthemselves(thesearemainlyexcerptsfrom
researchpapersconcerningtheirspecificeldsofstudy),exemplifyingthelan-

Particularlyinterestingisthefactthatthestudentsrepresentsuchavariety
ofdisciplines(inotherwords,thecoursereallyinvolves"teachingacrossthe
curriculum”).Thisyear,forexample,myclasscontainsstudentsofchemistry,
physics,philosophy,medicine,biology,psychology,tonamebutafew.However,
thisseemstobeabenefitratherthanadrawback.Firstly,itmakesforveryinter-
estingdiscussions,drawingcomparisonsofconventionsandpracticesofwriting
researchpapersacrossarangeofdisciplines;andsecondly,ithelpsstudentsfocus
moreonlanguagethanoncontent(unliketheapproachtheymightadoptintheir
otherclasseswherecontentmattersmore).Tosupportmyobservation,letme
quoteJohnSwalesonthesubjectofmultidisciplinarycourses:
