technologyasenvisagedinthepresentworkissubjectedtotheteacherandthe
requirementsofatraditionalclassroom.
Thephilosophyofenhancingthelanguageteachingprocesswithonlinematerials
andtoolsasrepresentedinthisbookisplacedwithintheclearlydefinedmethodological
contextofaCommunicativeLanguageTeachingclassroom,withitsobjectives,typical
classroomactivities,teacherandlearnerroles,attemptingatbalancingmoreform-
focusedandmeaning-focusedlearningactivities,individual,whole-class,pair-andgroup-
work,practiceandproductionactivities.TheuseoftheWebindifferentmomentsof
lessonspractisingvariouslanguageskills,asdescribedinChapterFour,servestheaim
ofintroducingadditionaldimensiontothelanguageinstructionwithoutmakingthe
Webitselfthemainfocusofthelesson.Inthepresentworkwefollowtheconceptof
integratingskillstryingtoarriveatthecoalescenceofonlineandoff-line,individual
andpair-work,teacher-orchestratedandlearner-controlledlanguageinstruction.In
thisvein,ChapterFourwillcontainasetofguidelinesontheuseofInternetmaterials
andservicesindifferentstages(pre-,while-andpost-)ofteachingparticularskills.On
theotherhand,theprocessofdesigningInternet-basedlessonsasdescribedinChapter
Fivefollowstheformatofpre-Web,while-Webandpost-Webphases,withpre-and
post-usuallyoff-line,productiveandgroup-workorwhole-class,andthewhile-Web
stagehavingpredominantlyindividual/pair-workreceptivenature.
Themainaimofthepresentworkistwofold:ontheonehand,toprovideanoverview
ofthecurrenttrendsandfindingsintheareaofComputer-AssistedLanguageLearning
withthefocusonInternet-basedactivitystructures,onlinereferencetools,Computer-
MediatedCommunicationservicesinteachinglanguageskillswiththeInternet.The
relevantchapterswillincludegeneraldiscussion,definitionsandclassifications,
possibilitiesandobstaclesofuse,aswellaspracticalguidelinesontheirimplementation
inaface-to-facelanguageclassroom.Theotheraimofthisbookwastorelateallofthe
abovespherestoaspecificteachingcontext,well-groundedintherealityofthePolish
educationalsystem,demonstratingthepracticeofInternet-mediatedface-to-face
languageinstruction.Firstofall,thediscussionoftheprocessofdesigningWeb-based
lessonsisexecuted,togetherwiththeconsiderationofvariousstages,processesand
decisionsthatateacherhastomakeinordertoconstructsuchlessons.Thesettingfor
theprocesscomesbothfromtheareaofgeneralEnglish(secondaryschool)aswellas
EnglishforSpecificPurposes(Englishforarchaeology).
Thepresentworkisdividedintotwomainsections.Thefirstone,encompassing
