Inthepresentbook,thedynamicsofchildsecondlanguagedevelopmentinvariouscontexts
isinvestigated.Themaingoaloftheworkistoshedsomelightonthemechanismsofearly
secondlanguageacquisitionthroughadetailedanalysisofthelanguagedevelopmentof
childrenstartingtheirsecondlanguageacquisitionbothatdifferentagesandinvariouscon-
texts.Theresultsoftheempiricalstudyareinterpretedinthelightofthemaintheoriesinthe
firstandsecondlanguageacquisitionresearch,aswellasinpsycholinguistics.Thepedagogi-
calimplicationsofthisresearchdealwitheffectiveteachingandlearningprocessesinthe
earlyforeignlanguageeducation.
Thefirstpartofthebookisacriticalanalysisofthestateofresearchinsuchfieldsasfirst
andsecondlanguageacquisition.Theempiricalfindingsarepresentedinthesecondpartof
themonograph.Thestudyinvestigatesthelongitudinaldatafromchildren,whowereex-
posedtotheirsecondlanguageGermaninnaturalisticsetting.Thevariableoftheageofonset
isthemainvariablewhichdifferentiatesthem.Theauthorinvestigatestheacquisitionofthe
samegrammaticalphenomenainthedevelopmentalsequenceofchildrenacquiringGerman
inaschoolsetting.Theresultsoftheempiricalstudyshowthatbothfactors,theageofthe
onsetofacquisitionandthelearningcontext,haveagreatimpactonthecourseofacquisition.
Startingsecondlanguageacquisitionaroundagethreecanleadtoaprocesssimilartothefirst
languageacquisition.Theacquisitionofthesecondlanguageatalaterageresultsinatypeof
acquisitioninwhichbothelementsfromthefirstandadultsecondlanguageacquisitionare
present.Theschoolcontextseemstobeinsufficienttocreatetheenvironmentforadevelop-
mentalsequencecharacteristictochildsecondlanguageacquisitioninthenaturalisticsetting.
Thelastpartofthebookcontainsatheoreticalinterpretationoftheempiricalfindingsfrom
differentperspectives,andthepedagogicalimplicationsfordevelopinganoptimaloutlinefor
foreignlanguageteachinginearlychildhood.
