Intra-industrytrade-isthisonlyastatisticalphenomenonorarealfactorenhanc-

ingtheanalysisofstructuralcompetitivenessandinﬂuencingdecisionandpolicy

making?DoweanalysetheIITindexesonlytoimprovetheresearchofforeign

tradestructureortosupplementthediscussiononGVC?

Tispublicationpresentstheresultsofresearchattemptingtoidentifyrela-

tionshipsbetweentwovitalissuesinthemoderneconomy:theintensiﬁcationof

intra-industryspecialisationinforeigntradeandchangesinthecompetitiveness

ofeconomiesundergoingstructuraladaptation.Teempiricalstudycoveredthe

groupoftheEU-10countries.

Economiccompetitivenessandintra-industrytrade

Signiﬁcantconsiderationsinthestudyweretoenhanceandaddtotheknowledgeon

theinternationalcompetitivepositionsofcountriesinforeigntradeandtobridgethe

gapinexistinginvestigations,e.g.byemphasisingtheroleandimportanceofintra-in-

dustrytradeinshapingthecompetitivepositionsofeconomiesintheprocessof

economicintegrationandtradeliberalisation.Importantly,competitivenesstheories

aswellasintra-industrytradetheoriesareopeninnature-scholarshavenoteven

yetfullydevelopedacceptabledeﬁnitionsofthephenomenaconcerned,playingan

increasingroleinbothpracticeandtheory.Intra-industrytradeindicesmayrank

amongthemostsigniﬁcantquantitativemeasuresofthecompetitivepositionand

majorfactorsreﬂectingthedegreeofrealadjustmentstotherequirementsofthe

singlemarket.Intra-industrytradealsoseemstoallowthemeasurementofthescope

ofstructuralchangestriggeredbytheliberalisationofforeigntrade.

Teliteratureshowsthattheseissuesattractinterestfromeconomistsworldwide.

However,theexistinginternationalstudiestendtofocusondevelopedcountries,

frequentlyexcludingCEEandothereconomiesintransition.Neitherdotheavailable

analysesanswerthequestionwhetherintra-industrytradeismoreorlessresilient

tonegativefactors(theglobaleconomiccrisis)intheexternalenvironmentordo
