ItseemsimportanttoexaminetowhatextenttradelinkagesbetweentheNMS

andtheEU-15resultedfromthedevelopmentofintra-industryspecialisation.Te

intra-industrytradeindicesreﬂectchangesinthecompetitivenessofeconomiesin

transitionaswellasinthelevelofadjustmentsofcountriestotherequirements

oftheglobalmarket.Terefore,itseemscrucialtoattempttoanalysethechanges

inthestructureoftradeoftheNMSwiththeEU-15in2004-2015onthebasisof

thoseindices.Suchananalysismayhelpassessthepaceandnatureofadjustments

withregardtothestructuralcompetitivenessoftheEU-10economiesintheEU

marketobservedinthecountriescoveredaferEUaccessionandtheirpreparedness

tooperateandcompeteinthatmarket.Intra-industryspecialisationisalsochar-

acteristicinthecontextofthefutureplaceofthosecountriesinproductionand

tradeintegration.Further,theanalysisshouldallowtoidentifythebeneﬁtsavailable

tothecountriesconcernedonaccountoftheinternationaldivisionoflabourinthe

EUstructures:whetheronlythosearisingfromthefreetradeareaandthecustoms

unionorperhapsthoserelatedtointegrationattheinternalmarketlevel.

TeEUmarketisnothomogeneousintermsofstructuralcompetitiveness,

thereforetheobservationofintra-industrycompetitivenessbyindustrywithinindi-

vidualeconomiesoftheNMSinrelationtotheEU-15andinmutualtradeshould

beasigniﬁcantadditiontotheanalysisandmaybehelpfulintheindicationof

possibleareasforintensiﬁcationoftradewithspeciﬁcEUmembers,distinguishing

betweenselectedindustriesasareasofparticularimportancetothedevelopment

ofintra-industrytrade.Suchanexaminationpointstoanotherpracticalmeritin

comparisonwithaveragedindicatorsfortheEUasawhole.

InthecontextoffurtherenlargementsoftheEU,itremainscrucialwhether

theotherSouth-EasternEuropeancountries,currentlyoutsidetheEUstructures

butpermanentlyinvolvedintheprocessesofregionalintegrationandtradeliber-

alisation,drawingontheEU-10experiences,canshapetheirparticipationinthe

intra-industrydivisionoflabourinasimilarmanner.

Tedominantelementofthepresentedstudyisconsideredtobeananalysis

ofchangesintheintensityoftheintra-industrytradeoftheNMSin2004-2015,

inrelationswiththeEU-15,inmutualtradeandintradewiththirdcountries.Te

noveltyoftheinvestigationismainlythefocusoftheanalysisonthetenecono-

miesoftheEU-10.Tiswillsubstantiallycontributetothedevelopmentofprior

researchonthephenomenonoftheintra-industrytradeandadjustmentprocesses

oftheNMSandthecandidatecountriestotherequirementsofthesinglemarket.

Furthermore,itseemsthatplacinggreateremphasisonIITasanadditionalmeas-

ureofcompetitivenessmayhelpmakerelevantcomparativeanalysesmorereal

andcontributetodeﬁningandimplementingmoreaccuratepoliciesshapingthe

economicrealityaswellastodesigningbetterbusinessdevelopmentstrategiesin

suchaneconomicenvironment.
