Beforewecomefinallytotheshortpresentationofthecontentsofthisbook,
itisworthclosingthissectionwiththewordsofCharlesTaylor(1989:27),
forwhomthestudyoftraditionisalsoanimportantelementofresearchon
thehistoryofphilosophy:
Iwanttodefendthestrongthesisthatlivingwithoutframeworksisutterly
impossibleforus;otherwiseputthatthehorizonswithinwhichweliveourlives
andmakesenseofthemhavetoincludethesestrongqualitativediscriminations.
Moreover,thisisnotmeantjustacontingentlytruepsychologicalfactabouthuman
beings,whichcouldperhapsturnoutonedaynottoholdforsomeexceptional
individualoranewtype,somesupermanofdisengagedobjectification.Ratherthe
claimisthatlivinginsuchstronglyqualifiedhorizonsisconstitutiveofhuman
agency,thatsteppingoutsidetheselimitswouldbetantamounttosteppingoutside
whatwewouldrecogniseasintegral,undamagedhumanpersonhood.
Thesewordsapplytoanyhumancultureofcourse.Inourresearchon
thelaterstrandsofHinduphilosophyweshouldseriouslytakeintoaccount
Vedictradition,beginningwiththeRVanddoresearchnotonlyonalinguistic
levelbutalsoonaconceptualone.Onlythenwewillbeabletodiscoverthe
framinghorizonsofthisculturewhichdefineitsuniquenessandexceptionality,
itsselfandtheselfofitsmembers.
9.Generaloutlineofthecontentofthisbook
Thisbookconsistsoffivechapters.Inthefirstchapter,welookatearly
SmṛticosmogoniespresentedinMS1andMDhP175-176,240.Itisargued
thatthecreationoftheworldisseenasacognitiveactduringwhichone
realitymanifestsitsaspectwithinwhichitcognisesitselfinsubject-object
cognition.Onticchangesaretheresultsofepistemictransformations.The
ComposeroftheMSpresentsacoherentmodelthelevelsofwhichcorresponds
tolevelsofcreationoftheself,beginningwithmentalabilities,thenabilities
forsensualcognitionandfinallythebodyendowedwiththeabilitytomove.
Theselvesofrealityareasfollows:thecosmos,ritual,society,manand
unmanifestrealitypresentwithinthem.Allthesemanifestationsareconceived
intermsofman.
