thatPolishculturehasasignificantinfluenceontheuseofdiminutivesinlan-
guage.Polishcultureisperceivedbyherasfullofwarmthandafection,which
explainstheexcessiveuseofexpressiveformssuchasdiminutives.Toproveher
point,shegivesanexampleofdiminutivesreferringtofoodwhicharesignsof
Polishhospitality.AccordingtoMarcjanik(2007:24-25),Polishhospitalityis
well-knownallaroundtheworld.Sheclaimsthatencouragingpeopletoeatand
drink(alsobyusingdiminutives),asarealisationoftherulegośćwdom,Bóg
wdom(meaningthatCtoreceiveaguestistoreceiveGod’),reflectstheimpor-
tancePolishcultureplacesonhospitality(seealsoDąbrowska1998:285;Torr
andChłopicki2000:278;Tomczak2005:331;Bartmiński2007:99;Lipniacka
2011:23).Whatisevenmoreinteresting,anEnglishmanwilltreatPolishhos-
pitalityasinfringinghissocialautonomyorevenpersonalliberty(Marcjanik
2007:24-25;seealsoChapter4.4.1).
Conversationsbetweensellersandbuyersatthemarketorawaiterandguests
attherestaurant,whensellersandwaitersusediminutiveforms,aretypicalof
