innumerableamountofdiminutivesandhypocorismssigniﬁesconsiderable

uimpulsivenessandintensivenessofemotionallifeofPoles”,theirgreatercor-

dialityanddirectness(Gawroński1928:217).

Polesopenlyshowtheiremotionsinlanguage.Tehospitalityofhostsserves

asagoodexamplehere(Wierzbicka1985:166-167;1984:128),asTorrand

Chłopicki(2000:277)claimthatencouragingtoeatisoneofthemostcharacter-

isticfeaturesofPolishculture.Kryk-Kastovsky(2000:165)emphasisesthefact

thatPolishculturehasasigniﬁcantinﬂuenceontheuseofdiminutivesinlan-

guage.Polishcultureisperceivedbyherasfullofwarmthandafection,which

explainstheexcessiveuseofexpressiveformssuchasdiminutives.Toproveher

point,shegivesanexampleofdiminutivesreferringtofoodwhicharesignsof

Polishhospitality.AccordingtoMarcjanik(2007:24-25),Polishhospitalityis

well-knownallaroundtheworld.Sheclaimsthatencouragingpeopletoeatand

drink(alsobyusingdiminutives),asarealisationoftherulegośćwdom,Bóg

wdom(meaningthatCtoreceiveaguestistoreceiveGod’),reﬂectstheimpor-

tancePolishcultureplacesonhospitality(seealsoDąbrowska1998:285;Torr

andChłopicki2000:278;Tomczak2005:331;Bartmiński2007:99;Lipniacka

2011:23).Whatisevenmoreinteresting,anEnglishmanwilltreatPolishhos-

pitalityasinfringinghissocialautonomyorevenpersonalliberty(Marcjanik

2007:24-25;seealsoChapter4.4.1).

Conversationsbetweensellersandbuyersatthemarketorawaiterandguests

attherestaurant,whensellersandwaitersusediminutiveforms,aretypicalof

PolesaswellanddiscussedbymanylinguistssuchasBralczykorHuszcza(see

Chapter4.4.1).AccordingtoDunajetal.(1999:236),diminutivesareoverused

inPolishshops,restaurants,cafés,orrepairshopswhenpeopleusetheso-called

politediminutivessuchaspieniążkiCmoney-DIM’.

Nicgorska(2007:64)stressesthefactthatforeignerswholearnPolishofen

ﬁnditdifculttounderstandallcontextsofusingdiminutiveforms,especially

whenPolesapplytheminformalsituations.Aforeignerisconfused,ashelshe

doesnotknowwhatthediminutivesexpressinfact.

1.4.2.2DiminutivesassignsofinfantilisationofPolish

Itisdifculttodeﬁneexplicitlywhethertheexaggerateduseofdiminutives

inPolishisapositiveornegativelinguisticphenomenon.Ontheonehand,

itmayindicateconsiderablelinguisticrichnessofPolish,but,ontheotherhand,

itcanreﬂecttheinfantilisationoflanguage(Zgółkowa1991:47;Dunajetal.

1999:236)andserveasanactofthreateningthehearer’spositiveface.

Polesseemtousediminutivesintheireverydayconversationsmoreofen

thantheEnglish.SomelinguistsevenclaimthatthenativespeakersofPolish
