.PositiveEducation(PE)isdefinedasuthebringingtogetherofthesci-
enceofPositivePsychologywithbestpracticesteaching,toencourageandsupport
schoolsandindividualstoflourish”(Norrish,2015,p.xxvii).TePEapproachis
designedtopromoteflourishingthroughandalongsidetheteachingofacademic
subjectswithouteitherbeingcompromised.Indeed,combiningthetwoshould
bepositivelymutuallyreinforcing,withwell-beingcontributingpositivelytoaca-
demicachievementandviceversa.TeInternationalPositiveEducationNetwork
(IPEN)usethedouble-helixmetaphortoillustratehowthepromotionofwell-be-
ingandcharactervaluesshouldbetaughtinafullyintegratedwayintertwinedwith
traditionalacademicgoalsthroughoutthecurriculumandacrossallsubjects.Te
notionofPEhasalreadybeenadaptedtothefieldoflanguageteachingalthough
empiricalworkremainslackingasyet(see,e.g.,MacIntyreetal.,2019:Mercer
etal.,2019).
4.StudentWell-being
Studentwell-beingcanbetaughtasadesiredoutcome,partoftheprocess,oras
atopicinteaching.Ideally,wewantlearnerstoflourishinschoolandenjoyhigh
well-beingduringtheirstudiesaspartoftheprocessoflearning.Ithasbeenshown
thatstudentswhohavehigherlevelsofwell-beingtendtoperformbetterinschool,
andhavehighermotivationandbetterachievementscores(e.g.,Gilman&Huebner,
2006;Quinn&Duckworth,2007;Verkuyten&Tijs,2002).Assuch,approaches
whichsupportstudentwell-beinginthepresentalsopromoteeducationalsuccess
andflourishing.Terefore,attendingtolearnerwell-beingnowcreatesanoptimal
learningenvironmentwhichstrengthensacademicachievement.Ratherthandis-
tractingfromtraditionallearninggoals,attendingtowell-beingsupportssubject
success.

Additionally,ifwerecognisethemainpurposeofeducationinpreparingstudentsfor
ahappyandsuccessful,meaningfullifeinthefuturethenwemustacknowledgethat
schoolingneedstoalsobeteachingthecompetencesneededforwell-beingthrough-
outlifeasadesirableoutcomeofeducation.Tismeansteachingaboutwell-being
asanexplicittopicaswellasaddressingtheskillsknowntofosterit.Helping
learnerstolearnhowtoflourishinlifebeyondschoolandintheirfuturelivesmust
surelybeadesirablepurposeforalleducationsystems.Giventhebenefitsofstudent
well-beinginthepresentandthefuture,Seligmanetal.(2009,p.295)conclude
thatwell-beingshouldbetaughtinallschools,uasanantidotetodepression,as
