andsocial-ecologicalsystemsinthatitistheabilitytoabsorbchange,self-or-
ganise,adaptandlearn,whileretainingsomeessentialfunction(Adger,etal.,
2011).Onecanpostulatethatthetwoaforementioneddefinitionscomingfrom
materialsciencelaythefoundationfortheapplicationoftheconceptofresil-
iencetoavarietyoflifeareasanddisciplines-fromscienceandmedicineto
sociology(Werner,1989)andpsychology(Milgram&Palti,1993),nursing,
business,ecology(Adger,etal.,2011;Strunz,2012;Wong-Parodia,Fischhoffa
&Strauss,2015)butalsopolitics,internationalrelationandeducation(Ellenbo-
gen,Klein&Wekerle,2014;Theron,Liebenberg&Malindi,2013).
Forthispaper,aliteraturereviewwasconductedfromtheperspectiveof
itsrelevancetoeducation,asaconsequenceofwhichthepresentdiscussion
isshapedasfollows:tocontextualizeit,thepaperstartswithanintroductory
conceptualframework,followedbyabriefreferencetothehistoryofthecon-
ceptandtheevolutionoftheresearchinthefield,butalsoashortreferenceto
apotentiallyproblematicaspectoftheconstructofresilience.Thenextunitsaim
togainthenecessaryterminologyandexploresomekeyconceptssurrounding
“resilience”discoursebyreferringtovariousdefinitionsofresilience,touching
brieflyontheriskandprotectivemechanismsandbyprovidinganoverviewof
whatisdescribedas“resilientchild”inresilienceliterature.Theguidingques-
tioninthistheoreticalexplorationishowresilienceresearchinforms(orshould
inform)thefosteringofresilienceineducationalsettingsofamulticulturalsoci-
ety,thereforethepaperendswithadiscussiononthewaysinwhichtheconcept
ofresiliencehasbeentakenupintheliteratureoneducation.Indiscussingall
theseissues,acommonunderlyingconsiderationishowwe,ineducation,can
strengthenchildren’spersonalresilienceandbestassisttheminovercoming
environmentalstressors.
