Introduction
Thereareanumberofwaysoftheorizingidentity.Differentdisciplinesuseit
asacategoryimplyingvariousfunctionsorsenses,whichalwaysresultsin
modificationsornewunderstandingsofitsmeaning.Therefore,itseemsap-
propriatetostressthatidentityisamulti-facetedconceptwhichissubjectto
evolution.InthischapterIoutlinethemostimportantapproachestounder-
standingidentity,startingwiththepresentationofvarioustheoreticalcon-
structs,throughclarificationofthedifferencesbetweenpersonal,socialand,
inparticular,professionalidentity,andthen,byreferringtocurrentframe-
worksforconceptualizingidentityintheteachereducationliterature.The
chapterendswithaprovisionalmodelforinvestigatingteacheridentity
whichprovidesatransitiontothefinalmodeltobeelucidatedinthesubse-
quentchaptersofthebook.
1.1TheoreticalConstructsofIdentity
Untilpeoplewereconfinedtooneplace,toonesocialgrouportoalife
whichtheycouldnotchange,theyhardlyeveraskedquestionsabouttheir
identities.TheyhadaHlifeprogramme”whichsufficedthem.Withanin-
creaseinthediversificationofpeoplesandcultures,itwasperceivedthat
takingandmakingdecisionscouldintroducechangesinpeople’slives,and
sotheissueofidentitystartedtomatter.Todaywecantalkaboutanumber
oftheoreticalapproachestoidentityand,therefore,essentialist,poststruc-
turalist,narrativeanddiscursiveunderstandingsofidentitywillbeintro-
ducedbelow.
