personaldefinitions.Thesourceofjustificationswouldamounttoautono-
mousidentity,inwhichprofessionalobligationsareunderstoodbyaperson
integrally.Inotherwords,professionalobligationsareequaltomoralobliga-
tionsandthepersonalnormsthatapersonhasinrelationtohimselforher-
selfandtootherpeopleonthebasisofhisorherconsciousandinformed
choices.
Allinall,Kohlberg’ssequence,whichculminatesinachievingautono-
mousidentity,anditsapplicationtotheconceptofprofessionalidentity,
providesaninspiringvisionofhowmoraldevelopmentcanbeunderstood
inthinkingaboutanindividual’sprofession.Anindividualcanstopatany
oftheabovestages,asprofessionaldevelopmentdoesnothappenautomati-
cally.Alotdependsontherequirementsoftheprofessionoronsupportto
helppeoplepassfromthepost-conventionaltotheautonomousstage.Al-
thoughitmaybedifficulttoachieveifinstitutionalstructuresdiscourageit,
reachingtheautonomousstageispossible,mostlythroughthepersonalef-
fortoftheindividualconcerned.
1.3CurrentConceptualizationsofIdentity
Sofar,Ihavegivenattentiontoseveralselectedtheoreticalapproachesto
identityandtobasicdivisionswithintheterm.Whatfollowsarechronologi-
callypresentedconceptualizationframeworks,orinterpretativetools,that
haveprovedpopularininvestigatingidentityintheappliedlinguisticslit-
erature.Althoughsomeofthesehavenotbeencreatedwithlanguage
teacheridentityinmind,eachofthemislikelytoprovideimportantknowl-
edgeofthoseaspectsofteacheridentitythatareemphasizedintheparticu-
larmodel.Iwill,therefore,trytolookatthem,wherepossible,withtheview
tofindingoutifthereisanycorecontentwhichtheyshare,ratherthan
evaluatetheseidentityconceptualizationsintermsofwhattheylack.This
mightpossiblyenablemetoworkoutanewinterpretativeinstrument,fea-
sibleenoughtoexploreteacherprofessionalidentity,thatwouldaccommo-
datemostofthecorecontentfromtheseframeworks.
