risingtheGovernmentCommission,byamemorandumdated9Febru-

ary1831,KadvisedtheUniversitytohaveitssealmadewiththeWhite

Eagleandanappropriateinscription”;24however,thereisnoknownsur-

vivingexampleofit.

Thelastyearsof

theCongressKingdom

Teconsequencesoftheauthorities’anti-constitutionalactions

wereparticularlyevidentintheireducationpolicies.On9December

1820StanisławKostkaPotockiwasdismissedasMinisterofPublicEn-

lightenment,usingthepublicationofhissatiricalnovelPodróżdoCiem-

nogrodu[AJourneytoIgnoranceville]asapretextandthuscausingan

outcryamongalargepartofthePolishclergy.25Potocki,whodiednine

monthslater,relinquishedhispostinfavourofStanisławGrabowski,

whosoongainedthenicknameofKMinisterofPublicBefuddlement”.
