1822WalerianŁukasiński,asoldierintheNapoleoniccampaigns,then
amajorinthearmyoftheCongressKingdom,andfounder(in1819)of
thePatrioticSociety,wasarrestedandimprisoned.Soonafter,Maurycy
Mochnacki,agraduateoftheWarsawLycée,andfrom1821astudent
ofLawattheUniversity,wasexpelledafteronlyayearandsoonafter
imprisonedonthechargeofhavinginsultedapoliceinspector.28Unlike
Łukasiński,hewasreleasedaftertwoyears,oncondition,however,that
hewouldcooperatewiththecensors;despitehisexemplaryserviceto
PolandandparticipationintheNovemberUprising,thislapsewasnever
entirelyforgivenbyhiscompatriots.
InthefewyearsprecedingtheNovemberUprising,thearrest
ofstudentswhoparticipatedinvariousplotswasanalmostdaytoday
occurrence.SomeoftheUniversity’sprofessorsandstudentstriedto
distancethemselvesfromtheactivitiesoftheconspiratorsandtheentire
undergroundmovement,butmetwithstrongcensurefrompatriotic
circles.AmongthemwereKazimierzBrodziński(1791–1835)andZyg-
muntKrasińskiwhowasstronglyinfluencedbyhisfather,andwhose
attitudetothetsaristauthoritieswasservileintheextreme.Underthe
relentlesspressureofhispeers,Krasińskigaveuphisstudiesin1829.29
Hewasoneofthetwostudentswhoattendedclassesonthedayon
whichalltheircolleaguesattendedthefuneralofSenatorPiotrBieliński,
defenderoftheleadersofthePatrioticSociety.Onthatoccasionhewas
physicallyinsultedbyanotheraristocrat,LeonŁubieński,andsubjected
togeneralcontempt.ProfessorBrodziński,howeveranex-Napoleonic
soldierandfrom1822SecretaryoftheUniversity30wasclearedofall
suspicionofservilitywhen,on9December1830,hedeliveredanad-
dresstothestudentbodyinwhichhedeclaredhissincerepatriotismand
wholeheartedsupportforthenationaluprising;herepeatedthosesenti-
mentsinthefollowingspeeches,inparticularinOnarodowościPolaków
[OntheNationalityofPoles].InhisDecemberaddressdeliveredatthe
University,hesaid:
Todayyourfathers,whoseheartsbutawhileagoweredrearyand
downtrodden,weepforjoy;latelyfearingforyoursafety,theyreceive
fromyourhandsthebranchoffreedom.YourloveoftheFatherland
andthecourageyouhaveacquiredfromthesamefathers,andthose
emotionsaretodayrevivedwithtalesofourgreatheroes.[ł]Who
wouldnotbeproudtodayofthetitleofProfessoroftheUniversity,
especiallyif,eveninthesmallestpart,hehadcontributedtothose
feelingsyouharbour?Soreturnnowtothisfreedtemple,whose
