involvedinthebattleagainstmendicantfriars.ThestrugglebeganinLon-

donandin1357itmovedtoAvignon,whereFitzRalphappearedtodefend

hisviewsbeforeInnocentVI.KilvingtonwasactiveinthesupportofFitz-

Ralphinhistreatise:IncausadominiArmachaniallegationesmagistriRicardidevoti

viricontraFratres.ItseemscertainthatFitzRalph’sandKilvington’sargu-

mentwiththemendicantscontinuedalmostuntiltheendsoftheirlives.

KilvingtonwasprobablyavictimoftheBlackDeathanddiedin1361,two

yearsafterthepapalbullreconfrmedthemendicantprivileges.Richard

KilvingtonwasburiedinSaintPaul’scathedralinLondon.11

WedonotknowanyofKilvington’sphilosophicalortheological

works,whichmighthavebeenwrittenafterhistransitionfromtheuni-

versitytoapubliccareer.Hisdiplomaticandecclesiasticalcareerdid

notstimulatehisfurtherscholarship,nordidhisbeingamemberin

RichardofBury’shousehold.Apartfromafewsermons,allofKilving-

ton’sknownworksstemfromhisteachingatOxford,andtheyoften

reﬂectthelivelyclassdiscussions.12Noneofhisworksiswrittenin

theusualcommentaryformat,followingtheorderofbooksinthere-
