reerandaprofessionaltranslatorwithseveralyearsofexperience(Hoff-

man1997).Investigatinghowtheyallcopewiththetaskcanbringimpor-

tantinsightsintotheevolutionoftranslationasahumanskill.

Inviewoftheaboveconsiderations,however,aboutthedevelopmental

natureoftranslationasahumanskill,andtobeconsistentwiththeirimpli-

cationsforthepersonwhoistheagent,thetranslator,itisonlyfairtosug-

gestthattheindividualperformanceofthepersonwhotranslateswillre-

flecttheplaceonthedevelopmentalcontinuumoftranslationasahuman

skill.Thisdevelopmentalperspectivemakesroomforallkindsoftransla-

torsandforallkindsoftranslationsproduced.Thetranslator-in-the-making

isalwayssomewhereonthedevelopmentalcontinuumfrombeingableto

makeuseofthenaturalabilitytotranslatethroughouttheprocessofdevel-

opingspecificskillstowardsachievingtranslationcompetenceandexper-

tise.Yet,thisdevelopmentalviewisnotexplicitlyadmitted.Itisofutmost

importanceinthisworktoemphasizethatinthisstudythetranslatoris

viewedasadevelopmentalentity.Heorshehastocoveracertainrouteof

knowledgeacquisitionandbuildinguphis/herrepertoireofskillstobeable

toproducetranslationuptoprofessionalstandards.Itisadevelopmental

routethatisnevercompletelyfinished(seeShreve1997,PACTE2003)as

whenprovidingtranslationservicesoneisconstantlyforcedtolearnnot

onlynewwordsbutgenerallyacquireknowledge.Asitisknownfromcog-

nitivestudiesacquiringnewknowledgeandlearningnewskillswillalways

havearestructuringeffectontheexistingknowledgeandskills(Anderson

1980,1986,2005,Donald2007b).

Takingthisbroadmindedviewallowsonetoseethebreathoftransla-

tionasahumanskillandmightleadusclosertounderstandingitsmulti-

layeredcomplexdevelopmentalnature.Afterallitisdifficulttoimagine

wherewewouldnowbeintermsofhumanityandcivilizationifitwasnot

forthehumanabilitytotranslate,totransmitknowledgeanddisseminate

achievementsandadvancestoalloratleastmanycitizensoftheworld.
