Theabovequoteshows,ontheonehandagenuineconcernaboutcontinu-
ingthestudyoftranslationwiththeturns(i.e.theculturalturnandthefunc-
tionalturn)theindependentdisciplineofTranslationStudieshastaken
sinceitfreeditselffromtheexclusivelylinguisticparadigm.Ontheother
handhowever,itfailstoseethatthelinguisticsoftodayisnolongerthe
“straitjacketofthetime”whentheapproachtotranslationwasproductori-
entedandthetranslationprocesswasconsideredasapurelylinguisticop-
erationinwhichtheaimisachievingequivalenceofmeaningthrougha
transformationofstructures(Catford1965,Nida1964,Koller1972).The
impossibilitytocapturetheessenceoftranslationevenonlyasaspecific
caseofsource-language-text-inducedtarget-languagetextproduction
(Neubert1985:18quotedafterSchäffner1998:83)ledtotheemergenceof
anewdisciplinetostudythemulti-facetedphenomenoncalledtranslation.
Still,translationintrinsicallyinvolvestheuseoflanguageorlanguages,
boththeuseoflanguageandtranslationaregoalorientedandfunctional
andserveacommonaimofcommunicatingwithothers.Manydisciplines
whichoriginatedinlinguisticsandotherrelateddisciplines,likeforexam-
plepsycholinguistic,cognitivelinguistics,sociolinguistics,textlinguistics
orneurolingusticsarefocusedonvitalaspectsofcommunicationthrough
languageandassuchtheyhavealottooffertothestudyoftranslationasa
socialphenomenon,asacognitive-communicativeactivityandasahuman
skill.TranslationStudieshaveborrowedvariousconceptsfromlinguistics
(seeLewandowska-Tomaszczyk1985:59)andfromneighbouringdisci-
plinesthroughoutitsshorthistory

2005).AsstatedbyChriss(2006)translatorsareappliedlinguists,language
professionalsandasexpressedbyHatimandMason(1990)intheirfore-
wordtoDiscourseandthetranslatorwritingontranslationisacontribu-
tionto“thisimportantareaofappliedlinguisticsresearch”.
Thecooperationandapossiblesynergyespeciallyintheareaofempiri-
calresearchhasrecentlybeenvoicedbysometranslationscholars(De
GrootandChristoffels2005,Gile1997,Shreve1997,Walters2005,Chmiel
2010)andthetimeisindeedripetoburythehatchetbetweenTSandlin-
guistics.Thebenefitsaremostlikelytobemutualandmightprovewrong
thecommonconvictionexpressedbyUwajeh(1994)inthefollowingway:
