Thebookexplorestranslationasahumanskillinitsevolutionaryperspectivefromthe

predispositiontotranslatetotranslationexpertise.Byassumingthatthehumanmindis

intrinsicallyatranslatingmindallpeoplewhoknowtwolanguagesareabletotranslatebutonly

somedeveloptheirnaturalabilityintoamorerefinedskill,fewerchoosetoacquiretranslation

competence,andfewattainthelevelofexpertise.Startingwithathoroughanalysisofthebilingual

foundationsonwhichtranslationasahumanskillisbuiltthenaturalabilityisanalyzedand

followedbyanup-to-dateaccountoftranslationasatrainedskillwiththeunderlyingtranslation

competence.Toaccountforthedevelopmentalnatureoftranslationasaskillasuggestionismade

thattheacquisitionoftranslationexpertisecanbeseenasaprocessoflearningtointegrate

knowledgeforthepurposeoftranslating.Whilenaturaltranslatorsintegrateonlytheirbilingual

knowledgeprofessionaltranslatorsbuildaKnowledgeIntegrationNetwork(KIN)inwhichallthe

knowledgerelevantforataskathandisintegratedandreadyforuse.Thetheoreticalassumptions

areputtoanempiricaltestwithresearchtoolsincludingabatteryofquestionnairesandTranslog,

acomputersoftwareprogramwhichallowstoanalyzethetranslationprocesswithout

compromisingitsecologicalvalidity.Thesubjectsincludetranslatorsatvariousstagesonthe

developmentalcontinuum.Itishopedthattheconclusionsandimplicationswillraiseawarenessof

thedevelopmentalnatureoftranslationasahumanskill,andthuschallengethecommon

misconceptions.
