TheTranslationalTurninModernismStudies*
ABSTRACT:
Terecenthistoriographicandmethodologicaldevelopmentsshowthatmodern-
ismstudieshasundergoneallthestagesnecessarytodiagnosea“translationalturn”in
agivendiscipline:theexpansionofthethematicfieldofresearchtoencompassthehistory
andpoeticsofliterarytranslation,theincreasingmetaphorisationofthenotionoftransla-
tioninthenarrativesoninterculturalexpansion,transmissionandtransformationofart,
and,finally,themethodologicalrefinement(“conceptualleap”)inthecourseofwhichthe
categoryoftranslationacquiredanepistemologicalvalueandtransdisciplinaryapplication.

Onlyinthelasttwentyyearshastranslationstudiesbeguntoconverge
withthehistoriographyofmodernism.Strangeasitmayseem,giventhe
widelyacknowledgedcentralityoftranslationtotheevolutionofmodernist
literatureanditsexceptionalconcernforthematerialityoflanguagethere
hasbeen,untilrecently,noframework,eitherconceptualormethodologi-
cal,thatcouldintegratethesedisparateresearchtraditionsintoacoherent
bodyofknowledgeandprovideadequatetoolsforassessing“modernist
translations,”whetherasmediatorsbetweenculturesorasformsofcreative
writingintheirownright(seeBeasleyandBullock2011,294).Although
thisarticlefocusespredominantlyonAmericanandWesternEuropean
developmentsintranslationandmodernismstudies,itisworthtonotethat
asimilardiagnosiswasadvancedbyEasternEuropeanscholars.1Aslate
