Summary
ThispaperfocusesonthepossibilitiesofferedbytheGIS(GeographicInformationSystem)toolsin
settlementstudiesaswellasinarchaeologyingeneral.Thereferencepointherewillbetheanalysisofsettlement
situationthatprevailedinEasternPomeraniaattheturnoftheBronzeandIronAge.Thisperiod,accordingto
theculture-historicalapproach,isrelatedwiththegenesisofsocietiesidentifedwiththeso-calledPomeranian
culture.Thearticleattemptstodiscussthechangesinthesettlementstructureduringtheseperiods.Forthispur-
pose,theresultsofresearchbasedontheapplicationofselectedmethodsofspatialanalysisimplementedwith
theaidofGISsoftwarewerediscussed.Inaddition,selectedsetsofdigitaldatarepresentingthelocalgeograph-
icalenvironmentwereused.Asitturnedout,thesestudieshaverevealedanumberofallegedtrendswithinthe
analysedsettlementtransformationsduringinvestigatedperiods.Theyhaveshownaninterestingconditionings
thatmaybeanimportantcontributiontothediscussiononthecorrectnessofarchaeologicalrecognitionandre-
constructionofthepastsettlement.
Havinginmindabovementionedfacts,itshouldbenotedthatGISsoftwarehasextendedthepossibilities
ofarchaeologicalinvestigation.Althoughthespatialanalysesthemselveswereusedbyresearchersmuchearlier,
beforetheimplementationofGISintoarchaeologicalstudies,itallowedtheintroductionofcompletelynewre-
searchmethods.Becauseofthecomplexityofsettlementprocesses,aswellastheimportanceofthespatialaspect,
GISisespeciallypredestinedtocarryoutresearchfocusedonpastsettlement.Oneshouldnotforgetaboutthe
possibilityofintegrationofarchaeologicalandenvironmentaldata.Whatismore,thissoftwareisveryusefulin
other-moregeneral-feldsofarchaeologicalresearch.Thisincludesdigitizationofanaloguedataandcreation
ofadvanceddatabasesthatcanlaterreleasedviaInternet.GISgivesalsothepossibilityofconvenientcreationof
cartographicimages(maps).Itisusefulduringfeldsurveyandthesubsequentelaborationofachievedresults
aswell.
Tosumup,atthecurrentstageofimplementationoftheGISsoftware,itseemsthatthesetoolswillbein-
creasinglyusedbyarchaeologistsatvariousstagesoftheirresearch.
