than3000entriesineachvolume.uEncyclopediaofmodernUkraine”continues
thebesttraditionsoftheUkrainianencyclopedias,inparticulartheUkrainian
generalencyclopedia,Ukrainianstudies,UkrainianSovietEncyclopedia.Te
criterionfortheselectionofpersonalitiestotheencyclopediaisarealcontri-
butionofapersontothedevelopmentofscience,culture,agriculture,public
institutionsofUkraine.TedatabankoftheuEncyclopediaofmodernUkraine”
isavailableinaformofelectronicmediawhichallowsyoutoquicklygroupthe
informationbythefields,authorship,dates.Tisopensupwidepossibilitiesfor
thepreparationofvariousfieldencyclopedias,dictionariesandtheirelectronic
Internet-version.TeapproachusedintheuEncyclopediaofmodernUkraine”
formationallowsitscontinuousadditionsandadjustments.
Teopportunityoftheinvolvementtoanopensourceprojectofalargenum-
berofparticipantsallowsyoutocreatenewformsofcollectiveknowledge,for
instance,electronicencyclopedias.Temostfamousprojectinthisfieldisthe
worldwidefreeencyclopedia:Wikipedia.Itiscreatedinmanylanguagesofthe
worldbythecollectiveworkofvoluntaryauthors,usingtechnologyofthewiki.
Sinceitsinceptioninearly2001,Wikipediahasbeensteadilygrowingandgain-
ingpopularityamongtheInternetusers.NowadaysanyuseroftheWorldWide
Webcantakepartinitsediting.Currently,Wikipediaisconsideredtobethe
bestencyclopediaintermsofvolumeandthematicscope:itcontainsmorethan
6millionentriesin250languagesoftheworld,thequalityofwhichexceedsthat
ofmostprintedencyclopediasoftheworld.TeUkrainiancomponentofthe
Wikipediahasabout120thousandentries.12Animportantfeatureoftheelec-
tronicencyclopediaisthepossibilityofawideuseofinformationdisplaymeans,
whichhavebeeneithergenerallyunavailableforpapermedia,ortheiruseledto
asignificantriseinthecostofprojects.Multimediainformationpresentation
withtheuseofanimation,movies,audioisbecomingthenormintheentriesof
Wikipedia.Allofthiscontributestothematerialcomprehensionincreaseand
facilitatesitsperception.
AnotherUkrainianelectronicencyclopediaisbeingcreatedandisfunc-
tioningonthebasisoftheprojectoftheUkrainianWikipedia.TeUkrainian
Internet-encyclopediaisaUkrainian-speakingfreelibrarycontaininghistori-
caldocuments,scientificarticles,textsoftextbooks,manualsandmanyother
interestingandusefulinformation.Tetitleuencyclopedia”doesnotquitematch
