27.5Hethrewdownthepiecesofsilverinthesanctuary,anddeparted.Hewentawayandhangedhimself.27.6Thechiefprieststookthe
piecesofsilver,andsaid,“It’snotlawfultoputthemintothetreasury,sinceitisthepriceofblood.”27.7Theytookcounsel,andboughtthe
potter’sfieldwiththem,toburystrangersin.27.8Thereforethatfieldwascalled“TheFieldofBlood”tothisday.27.9Thenthatwhichwas
spokenthroughJeremiah[*]theprophetwasfulfilled,saying,
“Theytookthethirtypiecesofsilver,
thepriceofhimuponwhomapricehadbeenset,
whomsomeofthechildrenofIsraelpriced,
27.10andtheygavethemforthepotter’sfield,
astheLordcommandedme.”
27.11NowJesusstoodbeforethegovernor:andthegovernoraskedhim,saying,“AreyoutheKingoftheJews?”
Jesussaidtohim,“Soyousay.”
27.12Whenhewasaccusedbythechiefpriestsandelders,heanswerednothing.27.13ThenPilatesaidtohim,“Don’tyouhearhowmany
thingstheytestifyagainstyou?”
27.14Hegavehimnoanswer,notevenoneword,sothatthegovernormarveledgreatly.27.15Nowatthefeastthegovernorwas
accustomedtoreleasetothemultitudeoneprisoner,whomtheydesired.27.16Theyhadthenanotableprisoner,calledBarabbas.27.17When
thereforetheyweregatheredtogether,Pilatesaidtothem,“Whomdoyouwantmetoreleasetoyou?Barabbas,orJesus,whoiscalled
Christ?”27.18Forheknewthatbecauseofenvytheyhaddeliveredhimup.
27.19Whilehewassittingonthejudgmentseat,hiswifesenttohim,saying,“Havenothingtodowiththatrighteousman,forIhave
sufferedmanythingstodayinadreambecauseofhim.”27.20Nowthechiefpriestsandtheelderspersuadedthemultitudestoaskfor
Barabbas,anddestroyJesus.27.21Butthegovernoransweredthem,“Whichofthetwodoyouwantmetoreleasetoyou?”
Theysaid,“Barabbas!”
27.22Pilatesaidtothem,“WhatthenshallIdotoJesus,whoiscalledChrist?”
Theyallsaidtohim,“Lethimbecrucified!”
27.23Butthegovernorsaid,“Why?Whatevilhashedone?”
Buttheycriedoutexceedingly,saying,“Lethimbecrucified!”
27.24SowhenPilatesawthatnothingwasbeinggained,butratherthatadisturbancewasstarting,hetookwater,andwashedhishands
beforethemultitude,saying,“Iaminnocentofthebloodofthisrighteousperson.Youseetoit.”
27.25Allthepeopleanswered,“Mayhisbloodbeonus,andonourchildren!”
27.26ThenhereleasedtothemBarabbas,butJesushefloggedanddeliveredtobecrucified.27.27Thenthegovernor’ssoldierstookJesusinto
thePraetorium,andgatheredthewholegarrisontogetheragainsthim.27.28Theystrippedhim,andputascarletrobeonhim.27.29They
braidedacrownofthornsandputitonhishead,andareedinhisrighthand;andtheykneeleddownbeforehim,andmockedhim,saying,
“Hail,KingoftheJews!”27.30Theyspatonhim,andtookthereedandstruckhimonthehead.27.31Whentheyhadmockedhim,theytook
therobeoffofhim,andputhisclothesonhim,andledhimawaytocrucifyhim.
27.32Astheycameout,theyfoundamanofCyrene,Simonbyname,andtheycompelledhimtogowiththem,thathemightcarryhis
cross.27.33Whentheycametoaplacecalled“Golgotha”,thatistosay,“Theplaceofaskull,”27.34theygavehimsourwine[*]todrink
mixedwithgall.Whenhehadtastedit,hewouldnotdrink.27.35Whentheyhadcrucifiedhim,theydividedhisclothingamongthem,
castinglots[*],27.36andtheysatandwatchedhimthere.27.37Theysetupoverhisheadtheaccusationagainsthimwritten,“THISISJESUS,
THEKINGOFTHEJEWS.”
27.38Thenthereweretworobberscrucifiedwithhim,oneonhisrighthandandoneontheleft.27.39Thosewhopassedbyblasphemedhim,
waggingtheirheads,27.40andsaying,“Youwhodestroythetemple,andbuilditinthreedays,saveyourself!IfyouaretheSonofGod,
comedownfromthecross!”
27.41Likewisethechiefpriestsalsomocking,withthescribes,thePharisees[*],andtheelders,said,27.42“Hesavedothers,buthecan’tsave
himself.IfheistheKingofIsrael,lethimcomedownfromthecrossnow,andwewillbelieveinhim.27.43HetrustsinGod.LetGoddeliver
himnow,ifhewantshim;forhesaid,‘IamtheSonofGod.’”27.44Therobbersalsowhowerecrucifiedwithhimcastonhimthesame
reproach.
27.45Nowfromthesixthhour[*]therewasdarknessoverallthelanduntiltheninthhour[*].27.46AbouttheninthhourJesuscriedwithaloud
voice,saying,“Eli,Eli,lima[*]sabachthani?”Thatis,“MyGod,myGod,whyhaveyouforsakenme?”
27.47Someofthemwhostoodthere,whentheyheardit,said,“ThismaniscallingElijah.”
27.48Immediatelyoneofthemran,andtookasponge,andfilleditwithvinegar,andputitonareed,andgavehimadrink.27.49Therest
said,“Lethimbe.Let’sseewhetherElijahcomestosavehim.”
27.50Jesuscriedagainwithaloudvoice,andyieldeduphisspirit.27.51Behold,theveilofthetemplewastornintwofromthetoptothe
bottom.Theearthquakedandtherocksweresplit.27.52Thetombswereopened,andmanybodiesofthesaintswhohadfallenasleepwere
raised;27.53andcomingoutofthetombsafterhisresurrection,theyenteredintotheholycityandappearedtomany.27.54Nowthe
centurion,andthosewhowerewithhimwatchingJesus,whentheysawtheearthquake,andthethingsthatweredone,feared
exceedingly,saying,“TrulythiswastheSonofGod.”
27.55Manywomenweretherewatchingfromafar,whohadfollowedJesusfromGalilee,servinghim.27.56AmongthemwereMary
Magdalene,MarythemotherofJamesandJoses,andthemotherofthesonsofZebedee.27.57Wheneveninghadcome,arichmanfrom
Arimathaea,namedJoseph,whohimselfwasalsoJesus’disciplecame.27.58ThismanwenttoPilate,andaskedforJesus’body.ThenPilate
commandedthebodytobegivenup.27.59Josephtookthebody,andwrappeditinacleanlinencloth,27.60andlaiditinhisownnewtomb,
whichhehadcutoutintherock,andherolledagreatstonetothedoorofthetomb,anddeparted.27.61MaryMagdalenewasthere,and
theotherMary,sittingoppositethetomb.27.62Nowonthenextday,whichwasthedayafterthePreparationDay,thechiefpriestsandthe
PhariseesweregatheredtogethertoPilate,27.63saying,“Sir,werememberwhatthatdeceiversaidwhilehewasstillalive:‘Afterthree
daysIwillriseagain.’27.64Commandthereforethatthetombbemadesecureuntilthethirdday,lestperhapshisdisciplescomeatnight
andstealhimaway,andtellthepeople,‘Heisrisenfromthedead;’andthelastdeceptionwillbeworsethanthefirst.”
27.65Pilatesaidtothem,“Youhaveaguard.Go,makeitassecureasyoucan.”27.66Sotheywentwiththeguardandmadethetomb
secure,sealingthestone.
